Experience the Charm of French Classical Comedy
The Actor's Theater Company is collaborating with Tokyo Shimbun to offer a unique theater workshop starting from July this year. This workshop, part of the "Suddenly Actor!" series, focuses on Molière's celebrated comedy,
Sganarelle - a humorous tale brimming with misunderstandings sparked by the jealousy of a Parisian townsman. The workshop will be conducted by Junko Yamamoto, a seasoned actress known for her extensive experience on stage and in film.

Duration: July 5 to September 21, 2023
Frequency: Every Saturday, with a mini-performance on September 21
Time Slots: Choose between morning (10:00-12:00), afternoon (13:00-15:00), or late afternoon (16:00-18:00)
Days Off: No classes on August 9 and 16.

This program consists of ten sessions lasting two hours each, designed for all levels of experience – whether you're a novice or someone with a bit more background in acting, everyone is welcome to join and enjoy the fun!
What to Expect
During the course, participants will engage in theater games, laughter practices, and scene rehearsals using the script from
Sganarelle. Prior knowledge or experience isn’t required, just a willingness to express yourself and have fun! The interactive nature of the sessions ensures that everyone feels comfortable and included.
The Grand Finale
The concluding session features a captivating mini-performance scheduled for September 21 at the Hibiya Library Convention Hall. This event will embody the culmination of your hard work and creativity throughout the workshop, giving you a chance to showcase what you've learned in front of an audience!

Instructor Profile
Junko Yamamoto, who joined the Actor's Theater Company in 1984, showcases a rich career highlighted by performances in acclaimed works such as
The Good Person of Szechwan and
Macbeth. Besides her stage contributions, she has played roles in various dramas and films, including
Rikuoh on TBS. Junko also runs her theater project, “Thank You!”, aiming to inspire and engage audiences through captivating performances.
About Sganarelle
Written by the revered French playwright Molière,
Sganarelle captures the hilarities arising from the jealousy and misunderstandings of a townsman in Paris. As the narrative unfolds, the tangled relationships among the characters serve as a humorous commentary on human nature and misunderstandings.
Who is Molière?
Molière (1622-1673) is a key figure in French literature, renowned for his sharp wit and satirical prowess in crafting comedies. His works have greatly influenced the development of French classic comedy, with notable plays including
The Misanthrope,
Tartuffe, and
The Miser. The troupe he led is recognized as a precursor to the national theater of France, known as the Comédie-Française.
How to Apply
Applications are open until May 29, 2023. Enroll by completing the online form available on the dedicated workshop website. Given the limited class sizes (only 18 participants per session), selections will be made via a lottery if demand exceeds available spots. Participants are encouraged to remain flexible with their chosen time slots to increase their chances of securing a place in this exciting workshop.
