The Special Exhibition 'Metamorphosis'
The Japan Science Future Museum, known as Miraikan, in collaboration with Nippon Television Network, is thrilled to announce its upcoming special exhibition titled "Metamorphosis: When the Body Changes, I Transform." This exhibition will run from April 23, 2027, to August 31, 2027, and aims to explore the themes of modern transformation through cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, avatars, and robotics.
From ancient times, humankind has sought to modify its appearance and capabilities through various means. Whether through clothing and makeup or tools and machinery that enhance physical ability, we have continuously devised methods to alter ourselves. Today, advancements in technology have propelled us into a new era where we can redefine ourselves without being confined to a single body or identity. Thanks to AI-enabled transformations, communication via avatars, and robotic enhancements, individuals can now express themselves in diverse and unprecedented ways.
This exhibition will offer visitors a unique opportunity to engage in various transformational experiences. Attendees will be able to try different identities and enjoy the peculiar sensations of altered physicality, all facilitated by the intriguing changes technology brings. Additionally, the exhibition will delve into transformations portrayed in anime and film, providing space to reflect on humanity's long-standing fascination with the idea of metamorphosis. By juxtaposing fantastical transformations imagined in fiction with those that are becoming realities, we can explore the underlying desires and creativity that drive our yearning for change.
Visitors may discover new facets of themselves, leading to moments of realization such as, "I might have this side to me as well." The central question of the exhibition, “When the body changes, how do I change?” invites deep reflection on human potential and the diversity of identity, offering a chance to meet a new version of oneself.
Miraikan will undergo extensive renovations beginning in October 2026, resulting in a temporary closure of the museum. Upon reopening on April 23, 2027, the newly evolved Miraikan will provide a more captivating and comfortable environment for visitors to partake in the special exhibition, "Metamorphosis." Looking into the future of transformation, this exhibition promises to be a refreshing journey filled with new discoveries about humanity's potential.
