Okayama University Explores Genetics and Well-Being

On October 22, 2025, Okayama University hosted a remarkable event titled "Unraveling My Instruction Manual through Genomics: Genetics × Cards ~ Science × Lifestyle × Inquiry = Well-being~," held at the Kurashiki Science Center. This initiative, backed by the Public Interest Incorporated Foundation Fukutake Education Cultural Foundation, was launched by visiting researcher, Remi Tokugawa, from the Graduate School of Education.

The event saw participation from around 11 attendees, including middle and high school students as well as educators. A notable guest, Yukina Yokokawa, known as the “Genetics Girl” from Okayama Prefectural Okayama Musashiyama High School, also joined as a speaker. The gathering aimed to shed light on the fun aspects of science, particularly genetics, and explore its connections with personal lifestyle choices.

Throughout the event, participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions about "genetics" and "identity" alongside various experts in the field. The highlight was an interactive card game centered on genetics, which ignited enthusiasm and fostered natural dialogues among attendees. The vibrant atmosphere was marked by participants expressing their curiosity in science.

Many positive reflections were shared by the attendees, with comments such as, "I developed a newfound love for genetics," and, "Talking directly with experts gave me a fresh perspective." These testimonials underscore the importance of such platforms in enhancing the understanding and appreciation of scientific concepts among young learners.

Tokugawa's vision through the Science Education Research Society emphasizes creating approachable learning environments in science, tying it with personal growth and exploration. The commitment from Okayama University to support the initiatives of its faculty members ensures the continuous spread of scientific knowledge, facilitating profound educational experiences.

The event reaffirmed Okayama University's role as a hub for innovative educational practices, dedicated to bridging the gap between science and lifestyle choices.
