National PACE Association Celebrates the Launch of 200 Programs for Elderly Care Across the Nation

National PACE Association Reaches 200 Programs Nationwide

The National PACE Association (NPA) has proudly announced a landmark achievement, unveiling its 200th Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). This significant milestone has been marked by the opening of the PACE Northeast Michigan program in Alpena, MI, providing essential services to the aging population in this rural area.

Jeff Meden, the executive director of PACE Northeast Michigan, expressed his excitement, stating, "Becoming the 200th PACE organization in the country, while also being one of the most rural programs nationwide, is an incredible honor for Northeast Michigan. This milestone reflects the hard work of our team and the strength of our community partnerships. Most importantly, it means older adults in our region now have access to comprehensive, coordinated care that allows them to live safely and independently in the communities they love."

Currently, PACE programs are operational in 33 states and the District of Columbia, catering to the needs of over 100,000 older adults. PACE offers a unique community-based model designed for seniors who may need nursing home-level care yet prefer to remain in a familiar environment. Originating in San Francisco over 55 years ago, PACE has evolved to provide integrated, person-centered care alternatives to institutional options.

"Reaching this milestone provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the vision of the early pioneers at On Lok, who aimed to create a better care system for seniors," stated Shawn Bloom, President and CEO of NPA. "Their efforts laid the groundwork for a model focusing on independence, dignity, and quality of life for our seniors."

The PACE model harnesses interdisciplinary teams that comprise primary care providers, registered nurses, home care coordinators, and various specialists, ensuring comprehensive care. Participants can access an array of services, from primary medical care and prescription drugs to transportation and social engagement, all tailored to support their overall well-being.

Evidence suggests that the PACE program significantly enhances the quality of life for participants, with 94% managing to maintain their residence within their communities thanks to comprehensive care that addresses their medical, social, and functional requirements.

In recent years, PACE's growth rate has tripled, coinciding with critical shifts within the nation's healthcare landscape. With all Baby Boomers reaching the age of 65 by 2030, and seniors outnumbering children by 2024, the urgency surrounding accessible, affordable care solutions is paramount. As this demographic transition unfolds, challenges arise, including housing affordability, caregiver support, workforce shortages, and the integration of technology for enhanced safety and independence.

The National PACE Association is actively collaborating with policymakers to expand PACE and simplify the enrollment process for seniors seeking assistance. As highlighted by Bloom, "The establishment of 200 programs reflects the increasing recognition that older adults deserve care models prioritizing independence, dignity, and quality of life. With the aging population, PACE is well-positioned to address the varied needs of seniors while concurrently reinforcing support for families, caregivers, and communities."
