New SCM Research Group for ROIC Improvement Launching in October 2026

The Japan Logistics System Association (JILS) is excited to announce the launch of a new research group, focusing on improving the Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) through Supply Chain Management (SCM) practices, set to commence in October 2026. This initiative invites logistics and SCM managers from relevant sectors to participate and tackle the pressing challenges they face in these fields.

As of April 2026, new regulations will mandate the appointment of logistics coordinators (CLO) for specific shippers, signaling a shift in logistics and SCM from a mere operational focus to a strategic business concern. As companies increasingly seek to connect logistics results with financial metrics such as ROIC, adopting an integrated view that encompasses procurement, production, and sales through SCM becomes critical.

Themes of Discussion

The research group will be grounded in the real-world challenges that members encounter in their logistics and SCM operations. An initial survey will collect insights into participants' specific issues, which will then be reframed through the lenses of key performance indicators like ROIC and the Cash Conversion Cycle (CCC). Based on this, topics of high interest will be selected for discussion.

Unlike traditional formats where predetermined lectures dominate, this research group will foster a collaborative environment. Companies will present their challenges, sparking discussions that aim to uncover solutions through sharing experiences and expertise.

The Global Standard of SCM

A centerpiece of this initiative will be the concept of “Global Standard SCM.” In the realm of professional SCM education, the knowledge framework established by the American Association for Supply Chain Management (ASCM) is widely recognized and serves as a common language for SCM practitioners worldwide.

Leading this program will be Ken Yukimoto, an APICS/ASCM certified instructor and educator involved in JILS’s SCM training programs, who will guide discussions and offer insights based on international standards.

Objectives and Outcomes

As members present their challenges, Ken will provide insights and explanations from the perspective of globally recognized SCM practices. The intention is to cultivate a thorough understanding through facilitated dialogue among participants to determine actionable solutions.

Event Details

The SCM research group will hold three sessions on the following dates:

• - October 22, 2026
• - November 19, 2026
• - December 17, 2026

Each session will run from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with the possibility of extending up to one hour based on participant numbers.

Format: A combination of in-person meetings in Hamamatsucho, Tokyo, and online sessions via Zoom.
Fees:

• - JILS Members: ¥49,500
• - Non-Members: ¥99,000 (tax included, per person)

Capacity: Limited to 10 companies (up to 2 participants per company, with a minimum of 5 companies needed for the group to run).
Participants must be managers or above in logistics, SCM, or related divisions of shipper companies. Consultants or information system vendors are not eligible to participate.
