AM General's Unmanned Ground Vehicle Makes Waves at AUSA 2026
AM General, a prominent player in military mobility solutions, is taking a significant step in defense innovation with the introduction of its
Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) at the AUSA Global Force Symposium 2026. This event, taking place from
March 24 to 26 at the
Von Braun Convention Center in
Huntsville, AL, serves as a platform for showcasing groundbreaking technologies aimed at enhancing military operations.
The recently unveiled UGV is designed to autonomously bridge logistics gaps, executing multiple mission profiles between Brigade Support Areas (BSA) and forward units. This robust vehicle is not only a milestone for AM General but represents a broader vision of the future of combat and support logistics.
Incoming President and CEO of AM General, John Chadbourne, expressed excitement about the vehicle, stating, "The UGV is a groundbreaking capability for Army logistics needs."
Innovative Features of the UGV
Reconfigurable Design
The groundbreaking design of the UGV includes a
reconfigurable cargo deck that can adapt to various mission requirements. It also features a
wireless remote-controlled T-boom service crane, enhancing logistical efficiency on the battlefield. AM General has partnered with
Carnegie Robotics and Textron Systems to ensure that the UGV meets rigorous standards for adaptability and operational superiority.
In addition to logistics, the UGV is equipped to handle medevac missions and can support combat operations with small UGVs that enhance battlefield lethality. This adaptability signifies a strategic enhancement for military planners who require versatile assets for diverse operations.
Powerful and Efficient Performance
Under the hood, the UGV is powered by a new turbocharged
6.5L 8-cylinder engine, delivering impressive performance with
250 horsepower and over 550 lb-ft of torque. This engine, which utilizes a common rail direct injection fuel system, not only powers the UGV but also lays the groundwork for future light tactical vehicle designs, including the iconic
HUMVEE.
Collaborative Excellence
AM General’s commitment to innovation is further emphasized by its collaboration with
Carnegie Robotics, which integrates a robust autonomy stack and modular hardware kit, allowing for quick deployment of next-generation unmanned systems. Leo Agafonov, the Director of Technical Operations at Carnegie Robotics states, "Together, with AM General, we are not only expanding the boundaries of technological possibility but also inspiring a future where affordable, attritable autonomy empowers new missions."
Meanwhile,
Sara Willett, Vice President of Programs at Textron Systems, highlights their role in providing the hardware and software control layer for the UGV program. They emphasize the importance of leveraging
commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) technology in advancing autonomous systems that can reliably operate in challenging environments, affirming Textron's role as a critical partner in this innovation.
Looking Forward
Currently, a UGV demonstrator is undergoing rigorous testing to prepare for an
Army request for proposal, which is anticipated for release later this year. This development signals AM General’s ongoing commitment to meet the evolving demands of modern warfare.
AM General’s innovative spirit, combined with its extensive product portfolio, which includes the HUMVEE and the
Joint Light Tactical Vehicle A2 (JLTV A2), positions the company to continue delivering sophisticated mobility solutions that address the unique challenges faced by military clients worldwide. With a proud heritage of serving armed forces across
over 70 countries, AM General is set to enhance interoperability among allies while pushing the limits of defense and automotive technologies.
