Alaska's Governor Mike Dunleavy recently underscored the significant potential of Graphite One's Graphite Creek Project, calling it a pivotal source for U.S. graphite supply security. In a recent op-ed published in Fox News, Dunleavy articulated how Alaska could aid in securing American supplies of critical minerals, particularly amidst global concerns over reliance on imports from countries like China.

The Graphite Creek Project, considered the largest known graphite deposit in the United States as per the U.S. Geological Survey, holds estimated reserves that could suffice the nation's graphite requirements for up to a century. This assertion highlights the urgency for the United States to develop domestic resources as it faced a complete reliance on imported graphite in recent years.

Governor Dunleavy expressed confidence in Alaska's resources, stating, "This one reserve alone could provide enough graphite to meet the entire nation's needs for a century." Dunleavy emphasized that with 57 out of 60 critical minerals found in Alaska, the state is uniquely positioned to contribute to national security and technological advancement.

He stated, "America's complete reliance on foreign graphite is a growing concern. Graphite One aims to establish a fully integrated domestic supply chain with Graphite Creek in Alaska as the foundation, extending all the way to processing and manufacturing in Ohio." This ambitious U.S.-based supply chain aims to convert a world-class natural resource into a secure domestic supply, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable, circular economy.

Graphite One's vision extends to the complete life cycle of graphite supply, encompassing mining, processing, manufacturing of advanced materials, and potential recycling. The company’s strategy gained further traction when Graphite Creek was nominated as a High-Priority Infrastructure Project. In June 2025, it was accepted into the federal FAST-41 permitting process—making it the first mining initiative in Alaska to enter this critical pathway, thus aiming to streamline federal coordination with regards to project approvals.
