Taco Fever: The Latest Recipe Book Hits the Shelves

The love for tacos has surged, thanks in large part to the recent Netflix documentary titled Everything About Tacos. This popular show has ignited a global obsession with this quintessential Mexican dish, and now, a new cookbook titled Tacos at Home!! Tacos are Mexico's Onigiri! has swiftly garnered attention and numerous fans.

Published on August 7 by Shufu to Seikatsu Sha, Tokyo, the book was released just two weeks ago but has already gone into a reprint due to overwhelming demand. Rakuten Books has highlighted this phenomenon by showcasing the book at the top of their weekly rankings in the bento category.

Tacos consist of a tortilla filled with a variety of ingredients including meats, fish, vegetables, and beans, topped with salsa—a classic sauce. To Mexicans, tortillas are like rice in that they’re a staple food. This cookbook suggests that tacos can be viewed as Mexico's version of onigiri (rice balls), but with an endless variety of fillings. The versatility of tacos is a key selling point, allowing readers to enjoy them with ingredients from various cuisines, not just traditional Mexican dishes.

One featured recipe includes a super simple taco made from ground meat, onions, ketchup, and cumin seeds, perfect for busy weeknights. The author also introduces a beloved favorite: a twist on traditional mapo eggplant tacos, enhanced with a hint of miso.

Moreover, another delightful recipe highlights the use of nutritious canned mackerel to create Mighty Mackerel Tacos, where miso’s richness pairs fabulously with raisins. For those seeking veggie options, several taco recipes feature eggs, vegetables, and beans, with zucchini omelet tacos presented as a must-try.

What’s more, the book doesn’t just stop at filling ideas; it also details how to make your own colorful tortillas in shades of green, orange, yellow, and black that are easy to whip up with everyday ingredients.

The mastermind behind this culinary gem is Minokamo (Akiko Nagao), a renowned cookbook author with plenty of experience in flour-based recipes. She showcases a diverse array of Japanese tacos featuring ingredients such as meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, and beans. The book also includes a special dialogue with Koji Moriyama, the chef from the esteemed Spanish restaurant Salsita in Minami Azabu, Tokyo, wherein they discuss what tacos mean to Mexicans.

To celebrate the book’s release, an Instagram Live event highlighted dishes including mapo eggplant, easy shrimp ajillo, and a zesty yuzu-flavored guacamole, along with a demonstration on how to cook tortillas.
