Construction Progress on Countryside Elementary School
CTA Construction Managers has announced an exciting advancement in the construction of the new Countryside Elementary School located in Newton, Massachusetts. The completion of the structural steel erection marks a vital phase in the ambitious project aimed at establishing a modern learning environment. This new building, which spans 76,000 square feet and is set to be three stories high, is being constructed adjacent to the existing school, allowing current students and staff to remain on site throughout this significant undertaking.
The decision to follow a phased construction model was strategic, aimed at maintaining continuity in the learning experience for the community while the new facility takes shape. Pat Tompkins, Principal of CTA Construction Managers, expressed enthusiasm over this achievement, stating, "Reaching the completion of the structural steel is always an exciting moment on a project, as the school community can begin to see their future building take shape."
Prior to the steelwork, much of the effort concentrated on groundwork, including excavation, laying foundations, and utility installations. With the steel framework in place, the physical structure of the building starts to become visible, highlighting the progress being made and the excitement shared by everyone involved.
This construction project will utilize over 14 million pounds of steel and concrete, which reflects the building's planned scale and durability. Furthermore, the Countryside Elementary School will incorporate the City of Newton's first geothermal heating and cooling system, a cutting-edge approach that reinforces the community's commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency. Donna DiNisco, Principal of DiNisco Design Inc., elaborated on the system's benefits: "This sustainable heating and cooling method uses the earth's consistent temperature to function effectively, which helps the school achieve its energy efficiency goals."
This innovative system will ensure significant energy savings, operating with 25–50% lower energy consumption compared to traditional HVAC systems. Moreover, it will also include a reduced reliance on fossil fuels, contributing positively towards combatting greenhouse gas emissions. Josh Morse, Public Buildings Commissioner for the City of Newton, highlighted the importance of this project, emphasizing its role in advancing special standards of sustainability within the community while reaffirming Newton’s leadership in educational facility innovation.
CTA Construction has a commendable history with the City of Newton, having also completed previous educational projects like the Spaulding Elementary School and Lincoln-Eliot Elementary School. Their relationship with DiNisco Design spans over two decades, showcasing a proven track record for successful collaborations on school constructions.
The new Countryside Elementary School stands as a testament to the community's aspiration for innovative and environmentally responsible educational facilities. As they look toward the completion of this monumental project, both the students and the residents of Newton can anticipate a modern, resource-efficient school that will serve future generations well.
