Shanghai Electric Launches Sino-Pakistan Academy
On November 24, Shanghai Electric officially inaugurated the Sino-Pakistan Academy of Excellence for Engineers, a strategic collaboration aimed at nurturing engineering talent in alignment with the Belt and Road Initiative. This significant educational endeavor is co-sponsored by Shanghai Electric and Shanghai Dianji University, marking a vital step in fostering international technological and cultural exchanges between China and Pakistan.
The opening ceremony of the academy was conducted simultaneously at three locations across both countries, combining both online and offline participation. Representatives from the Thar Block-I integrated coal mine and power project and Shanghai Dianji University signed a cooperation agreement as part of the first phase of the educational program, effectively launching the initiative to support talent development.
Zhu Zhaokai, President of Shanghai Electric Group, emphasized the need for businesses to seek versatile talents equipped with theoretical foundations, engineering practices, international perspectives, and intercultural collaboration skills due to the profound changes occurring in the global industrial environment. He stated, “The establishment of the academy is a significant initiative for Shanghai Electric to promote deep connections between industry, academia, research, and applications, as well as to build an international talent cultivation system.”
Gong Siyi, President of Shanghai Dianji University, noted that the newly established academy represents a key foreign demonstration project and will prioritize integration of high-quality teaching capacities and educational resources to maintain high standards in talent development systems, teaching quality, and overall service support. “The aim is to establish the academy as an important bridge for Sino-Pakistani friendship and technological cooperation,” she added.
As the first international program for talented engineers led by enterprises within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the academy will offer master's degree programs tailored to the specific needs of the Thar project, focusing on energy and electrical engineering. This dual-mentorship system, which combines professors and industry experts, aims to bridge theory with practical tasks to prepare interns for real-world challenges.
Over recent years, Shanghai Electric has concentrated on systematic development strategies for professionals and has fostered close connections between industry and universities to support a globalization-oriented innovation environment and advanced technological interconnections. The Shanghai Academy of Excellence for Engineers, a collaborative platform established by Shanghai Electric Group and Shanghai Dianji University, has prioritized strengthening technological expertise and cultivating top-tier professionals since its inception in 2024.
The Tech Expert Symposium, the academy’s inaugural flagship initiative, serves as a premier forum for leading experts and scientists, promoting knowledge sharing, technical collaboration, and talent development. Since its launch, five sessions have been held, showcasing cutting-edge technological trends and practical technical insights.
Underneath Shanghai Electric's proactive talent strategy lies a strong commitment to technological advancement and human capital in times of rapid transformation. In the first half of 2025, the company invested 2.546 billion CNY in research and development, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 9.4% and accounting for 4.7% of total revenue, with 39.5% directed towards emerging industries.
