XCMG's Support in Nairobi Building Collapse

On October 23, a tragic incident occurred in Nairobi's Eastleigh neighborhood when an 18-story construction building unexpectedly collapsed while ground-floor shops were open and workers were present. This disaster triggered immediate reactions from local emergency teams, including the Kenya Defence Forces, the Red Cross, and the police, who rushed to the scene to carry out essential search and rescue operations.

With a significant amount of debris and thick concrete slabs posing a major challenge, the need for heavy lifting and demolition equipment became imminent. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, XCMG Group activated its emergency response procedures promptly. Its Kenya office mobilized resources to coordinate with the National Disaster Operations Centre and on-site police personnel.

Upon receiving a call for assistance, XCMG deployed an excavator to the site on the same day, with a 25-ton crane sent the following day. The collaboration between XCMG's machinery operators and the local rescue teams was pivotal in addressing this unfortunate event. The excavator proved vital for freeing two individuals from the wreckage, as highlighted by William Sifuna Watitwa, a police officer for the Nairobi North sub-region, who mentioned that the crane allowed crews to lift heavy debris overhead, thereby alleviating the weight on trapped survivors.

Fredrick Nyasani, an administrator for XCMG in Kenya, emphasized the company’s longstanding relationship with the local community and its commitment to stand by them in difficult times. He stated, "In an emergency like this, XCMG has both a responsibility and a duty to use our specialized equipment and technical personnel to make every effort to support Kenyan rescue teams in saving lives."

The rescue efforts continued as of October 25, with local officials reporting that five individuals remained unaccounted for and four were receiving medical attention. XCMG's dedicated team remains on the ground, committed to assist local authorities in attaining their goal of finding the remaining survivors and ensuring that the area is cleared for safety.

This incident not only showcases the community-oriented approach of XCMG but also highlights the importance of preparedness and swift action during emergencies. As the rescue explores its final stages, the efforts of XCMG serve as a reminder of collective responsibility in times of crises. The company stands ready to provide continued support until all operations are concluded and the needs of the community are fulfilled.
