Hope in Every Brushstroke: Love Luggage Initiative
In a heartwarming initiative titled
Love Luggage, Unclaimed Baggage has teamed up with the
Society of Illustrators to transform unclaimed luggage into symbols of hope for children in the foster care system. This project aims to kick off
National Foster Care Month by emphasizing dignity and care through art. On
May 2, 2026, renowned children's book illustrators will gather at the Society of Illustrators in New York City to participate in a live painting event that showcases their talent while supporting a noble cause.
The Significance of Love Luggage Initiative
Foster children often face unsettling transitions, where their belongings, instead of being packed neatly, are thrown into black trash bags. The
Love Luggage initiative seeks to replace these bags with personalized suitcases, providing a more respectful way for kids to carry their essentials.
CEO of Unclaimed Baggage,
Sharon Owens, stated, "Every child in the foster care system deserves to feel seen, valued, and deeply loved. Each painted suitcase transcends its function; it becomes a message of worth and a gentle reminder of hope during a difficult transition." Through the collaborative efforts of artists, this initiative not only addresses a basic need but also caters to the emotional well-being of the children involved.
The Upcoming Event and Artistic Participation
The launch event on May 2 will feature a lineup of 20 distinguished children’s illustrators, including:
- - Daniel Salmieri, known for the New York Times bestseller Dragons Love Tacos.
- - Brendan Wenzel, a Caldecott Honor-winning author and illustrator that crafted They All Saw a Cat.
- - James Yang, recognized for his work on Stop! Bot!
- - C.G. Esperanza, awarded for My Daddy Is a Cowboy.
- - Claudia Rueda, the creator behind the bestseller Bunny Slopes.
- - Lisk Feng, an award-winning illustrator for major brands like Apple and Chanel.
These artists will transform hard-sided suitcases into expressive artworks, turning each piece into a
canvas of hope that symbolizes resilience and belonging.
Making a Meaningful Impact
Attendees don’t just observe—participants will have the chance to contribute their artistry to the project as well. Each suitcase painted during the event will be gifted to local foster children, complete with
Unclaimed Baggage’s storybook
Tuesday’s Bear, which encapsulates the journey of a bear finding love and belonging. Additionally, a teddy bear and a “first night” bag of toiletries will accompany each suitcase, further ensuring that these children have a sense of comfort.
Arabelle Liepold, Executive Director at the Society of Illustrators, emphasized the partnership's importance, stating, “This event embodies our mission to promote the art of illustration while contributing to the welfare of the community. Together with Unclaimed Baggage, we are inspiring creativity rooted in compassion.”
A National Journey of Awareness
Following this remarkable event, the decorated suitcases will embark on a national touring exhibition, showcasing at airports, museums, and libraries. This tour aims to spark discussions around foster care, drawing attention to the challenges faced by many children and inviting communities to engage in meaningful dialogues about support and change.
In addition to this launch event in New York, painting workshops will be held nationwide throughout May, involving communities from various states—including hubs like Texas and Tennessee—creating more personalized suitcases. Notably, the flagship store of Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro, Alabama, aims to produce over 250 painted suitcases for these children.
A Call for Compassion
The
Love Luggage initiative demonstrates how art, storytelling, and purpose intertwine, with one simple suitcase transforming into a powerful narrative of dignity and hope. As
Sharon Owens articulated, this creative endeavor aspires to impact the lives of numerous foster children profoundly—one suitcase at a time.
