WeRide to Lead Autonomous Driving Pilot Project in Switzerland

WeRide Inc., a prominent name in the realm of autonomous driving, is taking its innovations to Switzerland where it has been appointed as the technology supplier for a cutting-edge pilot project. This initiative is a collaboration supported by the Canton of Zurich and the national railway company, Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB), and is managed through the Swiss Transit Lab (STL). The project is a testament to WeRide's advanced Level 4 autonomous driving technology, as well as its substantial operational expertise, acknowledged globally.

The pilot is set to launch in the second quarter of 2025 with two autonomous vehicles equipped with WeRide technology that will slowly transition into full operation, expanding the fleet to four cars. This fully unmanned service is anticipated to run for five consecutive years, with plans for further growth including the addition of eight more autonomous vehicles in 2026. The initial phase of operations will be conducted in Switzerland's Furttal Region where residents will have the convenience of booking these self-driving vehicles through a mobile application provided by ioki.

Tony Han, founder and CEO of WeRide, expressed his enthusiasm about the project, emphasizing that it showcases WeRide's dedication to broadening the horizons of autonomous driving solutions across Europe. He highlights the versatility of their technology, which has proven itself across various applications, including those linked to major sports events, airports, and now public transportation.

In Switzerland, the railway system plays a crucial role in linking towns and cities, with citizens reportedly using trains around 70 times a year — the highest frequency in Europe. However, suburban regions often grapple with inadequate transportation options that this pilot project aims to address. SBB, as a vital partner, operates over a 3,000-kilometer network, making it a significant player in Swiss transportation.

The project manager, STL, aims to explore and foster groundbreaking mobility solutions, and we can anticipate that the integration of WeRide's autonomous driving technology will greatly contribute to expanding Switzerland's intelligent transportation infrastructure.

This venture marks WeRide's third major project in Europe within a span of eight months. The company recently made headlines by launching Europe’s first commercial autonomous minibus service at Zurich Airport and provided Level 4 autonomous shuttle services during the 2024 French Open in Paris. Such brisk expansion underlines not only the adaptability of the WeRide One autonomous driving technology platform but also the growing interest in their technologies within European markets.

In conclusion, with the introduction of this pilot project, WeRide is set to make a significant impact on the landscape of transportation in Switzerland, opening avenues for future advancements in autonomous travel. As the project unfolds, it may very well redefine how individuals navigate suburban areas while also enhancing the existing transportation ecosystem in one of Europe's most progressive nations.
