The Enchantment of Ueno Toshogu Shrine's Autumn Illumination
Ueno Toshogu Shrine, a significant cultural landmark in Ueno Park, Tokyo, will once again open its doors to visitors for its annual night illumination event titled "Yume Kanau Hikari no Yoru" (Dream Fulfillment Night). The event runs from October 25 (Saturday) to November 9 (Sunday) and invites guests to experience the awe-inspiring beauty of the shrine illuminated under night skies.
The shrine, which was founded in 1627 and designated as an Important Cultural Asset, features a magnificent structure built in 1651. This year's lighting design has been expertly crafted by renowned lighting designer Mikiko Ishii, enhancing the shrine's architectural details with brilliant golden hues that mesmerize all who enter.
Visitors can marvel at the stunning view of the illuminated main hall and the iconic Karamon gate, both of which are integral parts of this historic site. The illumination will be on display each night from 5 PM to 7 PM, allowing ample time for guests to explore the carefully curated ambiance.
One of the highlights of the event is the limited-time "Yume Kanau Mamoru" (Dream Fulfillment Amulet), priced at 800 yen. This popular amulet is inspired by the night sky and features a beautifully crafted dragon that is said to fly during the evening hours, a legend linked to the Karamon gate, carved by the renowned craftsman Uramasa Jingo.
Moreover, attendees can obtain a special limited-edition goshuin (temple seal) printed on deep green paper with sparkling foil, priced at 1300 yen. This unique seal changes its appearance depending on the angle, making it a collector's item.
The golden hall and Karamon gate, both significant examples of early Edo period architecture, are beautifully highlighted against the night sky. The new lighting design brings out the richness of the gold, making these features shimmer in a captivating display. The intricate carvings beneath the eaves are vividly illuminated, adding to the overall ambiance of the shrine.
As visitors walk through the precincts, they will find that the entire area is photogenic, with stunning backdrops at every turn. The shrine's sacred tree and quiet space, "Shizushin-dokoro", will also be part of the lighting experience, and guests are encouraged to capture meaningful moments.
For those wishing to explore the shrine further, a limited number of lanterns featuring the shrine’s crest—the Aoi Mon—are available for loan. These lanterns cast a gentle glow and create unique shadows that enhance the traditional atmosphere.
During the illumination period, guests can also enjoy the lit-up Kaguraden (shrine hall for music and dance), torii gates, and cleansing station, all of which contribute to the serene and mystical environment.
In sum, Ueno Toshogu Shrine’s autumn illumination event provides a unique opportunity to appreciate the intersection of traditional culture and modern lighting artistry, creating an experience that is entirely different from daytime visits. Don't miss the chance to witness this spectacular transformation and take home a piece of history with the special amulets and goshuin.
