A Unique Concert: 'The Memories of Five Strings'
On July 8, 2025, the Suginami Public Hall in Tokyo will host a remarkable event titled
'The Memories of Five Strings — Japanese String Quintet', focusing on the often-overlooked potential of the double bass within the string quintet format. This concert promises to bring together a rich tapestry of sounds and emotions from contemporary Japanese music compositions.
Historically, original compositions featuring the double bass in string quintets have been scarce, especially in traditional classical music. Yet, prominent Japanese composers have discovered unique avenues for expression through this ensemble, resulting in a collection of original works that capture the essence of modern music.
The concert will spotlight several masterpieces from distinguished Japanese composers, showcasing their innovative approaches and contributions to the realm of string quintet compositions. One of the highlights will be the
'Exorcism' by the late Kazuhira Shimoyama, which stands as a pivotal work in the establishment of his compositional techniques for string instruments. Exploring this piece will allow audiences to delve deeper into the complexities of contemporary Japanese music.
Additionally, the piece
'Concertant' by the late Motohiko Adachi, composed during a transitional period in his career when he was branching out into folk music and traditional melodies, will also be performed. This piece reflects significant shifts in Adachi’s musical journey and offers listeners a chance to admire his evolution as a composer.
The event will also feature a re-performance of
'Tchaikovskyana', an homage to Tchaikovsky by modern Japanese composer Toshirō Nakagawa, showcasing his distinctive style and artistic vision. Moreover, audiences can look forward to new commissioned works from emerging talents, including Shion Sahara, who continues to produce ambitious works, and Yuya Nabatae, who has recently won the 32nd Akutagawa Yasushi Suntory Composition Award.
The musical performances will be executed by five accomplished performers well-versed in both classical and contemporary music, bringing the compositions to life and creating an unforgettable auditory experience.
