CarrAmerica Celebrates America's 250th Birthday at Historic Willard Center
CarrAmerica Celebrates America’s Milestone at The Willard Center
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, CarrAmerica has prominently displayed a cheerful banner reading "Happy Birthday USA" at The Willard Center, located conveniently at 1455 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington D.C. This is a point of historical significance, as the building holds a cherished place in American lore, being a residence for President Abraham Lincoln before his presidency and the backdrop for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s impactful work on his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech.
The banner hang marks not only the Semiquincentennial—250 years since the Declaration of Independence—but also celebrates 40 years since the building's restoration in 1986 by the Oliver T. Carr Company, now known as CarrAmerica. This real estate firm took a daring leap in the early '80s, investing in a building that critics deemed too risky for renovation. After overcoming substantial challenges, the Willard Center opened its doors once again, reclaiming its vital role in D.C.'s landscape.
The Willard Center's story is rich in historical moments. In 1861, shortly before Lincoln's inauguration, he resided there, and later that same year, the venue hosted a pivotal Peace Convention aimed at averting the impending Civil War. By 1963, Dr. King had the honor of staying in the Willard, just hours before delivering what would become one of the most significant speeches in American history at the Lincoln Memorial. Sadly, by 1968, following the civil unrest that erupted after Dr. King's assassination, the Willard closed, falling into disrepair for a decade.
A revival came when Oliver T. Carr Jr. undertook the daunting task of restoring the historic building. His vision and dedication led to the reopening of The Willard in August 1986, a transformation left unfulfilled by others. Since then, CarrAmerica has called it home, contributing not only to the company’s legacy but also to that of Washington D.C.'s real estate evolution.
CEO Wish Carr expressed the sentiments tied to the anniversary: “This banner is a small gesture, but it points to something much bigger. Forty years ago, this building was empty and slated for demolition. Today it stands as one of the most historic working addresses in Washington, and we are proud that our company still calls it home during the year our country turns 250.”
In addition to the banner, CarrAmerica plans to host further events related to The Willard's rich past and the D.C. 250 Semiquincentennial celebrations throughout 2026, highlighting both the history of the building and its consequential role in American narrative.
This grand celebration serves as a reminder of the Willard Center's significance—not just as a landmark, but as a symbol of resilience and historical importance, intertwining the fates of the nation and its people. As Independence Day approaches, CarrAmerica’s heartfelt tribute encapsulates both the pride in its heritage and an optimistic vision for the future as it embraces the next chapter for both the company and the nation.
