Celebrating Flowers and Art: Tokyo's Grand Festival of Color and Culture

From April 17 to 19, 2026, the streets of Marunouchi in Tokyo will transform into a mesmerizing floral festival known as "TOKYO FLOWER CARPET 2026." This year marks the 25th anniversary of flower carpet culture in Japan and the 30th anniversary of the beloved Pokémon franchise. In honor of these twin celebrations, an extraordinary event titled "Flower Celebration" will take place, featuring over 30,000 flowers, including carnations and chrysanthemums, as well as around 500 potted orchids. With the help of 200 volunteer participants, ten splendid artworks will be created, covering approximately 330 square meters.

The theme of this vibrant festival is "Let's Bloom Together for the Future: Art of Coexistence." The floral carpets, meticulously crafted from individual flower petals, embody the spirit of "co-creation," allowing anyone, regardless of age, nationality, or ability, to participate in this inclusive art project. The event will serve as a symbol of social harmony and diverse perspectives, showcasing the unity of citizens, businesses, and artists along the celebrated street of Gyoko-dori.

One of the highlights of this year's festival will be a special floral artwork that merges traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e art style with the globally adored Pokémon, symbolizing the fusion of cultural heritage and contemporary creativity. This unique piece will broadcast the allure of Japanese culture to both domestic and international audiences while delivering messages of celebration and hope for the future.

Additionally, the core initiative of this festival, the inclusive art project "Bloomix Tokyo," aims to bring together people with disabilities and those without, fostering collaboration to create a massive floral art piece. This artwork will include contributions from five students from special support schools and one piece crafted by individuals with visual impairments, measuring approximately 6 meters by 35 meters. As individual expressions combine into a magnificent collective creation, it will serve as a visual metaphor for a harmonious society.

The project also emphasizes sustainability by repurposing fallen trees from the Noto Peninsula earthquake of 2024 into wood chips for art, serving as a poignant reminder of nature's resilience and hope for the future. This beautiful intersection of plants, wood, and human expression invites visitors to engage deeply with the ethos of a "society that lives together."

Moreover, the festival will not only display floral art but will also cultivate a sustainable cycle by recycling flowers into new materials, called "flower drawing papers," which are donated to special support schools in Tokyo for art education initiatives. Projects that use art as a tool for awareness and inclusion will resonate throughout the event, reinforcing the aims of accessibility and sustainability.

The noble patronage of Her Imperial Highness Princess Nobuko, who will take on the honorary presidency of the Japan Flower Carpet Cultural Association from April 1, 2026, adds prestige to the project. Under the expert supervision of Yasuhiko Fujikawa, an acclaimed flower artist and chairman of the association, the festival promises to represent Tokyo's rich cultural fabric and elevate flower carpet culture into a new realm of tourism.

A completion ceremony will occur at 4 PM on April 18, allowing everyone to join in celebrating the achievement of this grand floral vision.
