Rallying for a Nuclear-Free Society in Tokyo
On March 7, 2023, approximately 8,500 participants gathered at Yoyogi Park in Shibuya for the "Stop Nuclear Power! March 7 National Gathering." This significant event, organized by the group "Sayonara Nuclear Power 10 Million Action," called for a shift towards a society that does not rely on nuclear power and promotes renewable energy sources.
The protest comes 15 years after the catastrophic Fukushima nuclear accident, which has left an indelible mark on Japan's energy policies and public consciousness. The participants aimed to raise awareness about the ongoing relevance of energy issues and the need to protect their lives and communities. This rally is held biannually, in March and September, to keep the conversation alive regarding the dangers of reliance on nuclear energy.
The main stage featured live performances by various artists and speeches by representatives from numerous anti-nuclear organizations. Participants were provided with signs reading slogans such as "NO NUKES," "Let's Go Renewable!" and "The Fukushima Incident is Not Over," emphasizing the urgency of transitioning to renewable energy and eliminating nuclear power reliance from Japan’s energy framework.
Participants Marching Through Tokyo
Following the main event, the crowd divided into two groups to march through the bustling streets of Shibuya and Harajuku. They held up their signs and banners, calling upon local residents, tourists, and shoppers to support the vision of a nuclear-free society. The vibrant atmosphere was filled with chants and music, making it a peaceful yet powerful demonstration.
The Pal System group expressed their commitment to working towards a resource-circulating society that is not dependent on nuclear energy. With collaboration from local communities and consumers, they plan to further promote energy shifts and sustainable practices.
