ProStart Students Invited to Apply for the JumpStart Grant
Starting today, culinary students from ProStart schools across the United States have a unique opportunity to elevate their career prospects by applying for the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) JumpStart grant. This initiative is designed to connect students with industry leaders and provide them with hands-on experience during the highly anticipated National Restaurant Association Show scheduled for May 22-25, 2027, in Chicago.
The JumpStart grant covers essential expenses for one exemplary team, including travel, accommodations, participation fees, and up to $2,500 in additional costs for a maximum of twelve students and three chaperones. The application process is open to current ProStart schools, and applications must be submitted by November 13, 2026.
Experience and Exposure
This initiative aligns with the NRAEF's mission of enhancing educational opportunities within the restaurant and foodservice industry. By participating in the annual trade show, ProStart students will gain direct access to industry leaders and cutting-edge innovations that shape the future of food service and hospitality.
Previous participants have described their experiences as transformative. Students have noted that their involvement not only deepened their understanding of where they fit within the industry but also ignited an enthusiasm for pursuing careers in culinary arts. The hands-on experiences allow students to see beyond traditional roles, providing insights into a variety of opportunities—from culinary experts to technology innovators—and fostering connections that may guide their professional paths.
Dr. Monica Parrish Trent, Executive Director of the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation, spoke about the profound impact of immersive experiences on student development. "Those pivotal moments when students begin to identify themselves within the industry are critical in shaping their future career pathways. Programs like JumpStart empower students, boosting their confidence and connecting their academic knowledge to real-world applications in the restaurant sector," she explains.
The ProStart Program
ProStart is a comprehensive, nationwide two-year high school program that merges classroom education with real-world culinary experiences. It serves nearly 222,000 students across approximately 2,200 schools in all states, Washington D.C., Guam, and Puerto Rico. The program focuses on practical skill development, including teamwork, professional conduct, and effective communication—essential attributes for success in the restaurant industry.
The JumpStart grant, inaugurated in 2025, is exclusive to current ProStart schools and aims to support students aged sixteen and older. Winning schools will demonstrate how this unique opportunity will positively influence their ProStart students and enhance their future careers in the restaurant and hospitality sectors.
For students eager to embark on exciting career journeys, this grant provides a golden ticket to explore various paths they may not have previously considered, potentially shaping the future leaders of the culinary world.
