Anna S. Rickell has been a remarkable figure in the field of clinical social work, dedicating nearly sixty years to improving mental health and supporting individuals through challenging times. Her journey began at Meredith College, Raleigh, NC, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology in just three years, graduating in 1962. With a thirst for knowledge, she ventured to New York City in 1964 to start her career in social work, taking a role in casework within the Welfare Department. Her commitment and talent led her quickly up the ranks to a supervisory position.

In 1969, Anna graduated from Columbia University holding a Master of Science in Social Work. This accomplishment set the stage for an esteemed career. After completing her education, she moved to Los Angeles, immersing herself in the mental health landscape at a clinic where she worked with diverse populations. Anna then transitioned to the San Francisco area, joining a Family Service agency as a caseworker supporting both children and adults. During this crucial period, she pioneered her path by obtaining two significant licenses — as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT). Her innovative approach in the field led to prestigious recognition in 1969 for her contributions to family life in Marin County.

After establishing herself, Anna returned to New York, where her career flourished over 27 years with engagements in private practice and at the Counseling Center of Southern Westchester. She provided individual and group therapy while holding licenses to practice across multiple states, including New York, Texas, Maryland, and South Carolina. Anna’s formidable contributions to group therapy did not go unnoticed; she received accolades, including a certificate acknowledging her excellence in this field. Additionally, her selfless service during Hurricane Katrina earned her a Certificate of Appreciation for her relief efforts, a testament to her commitment to community and humanitarian support.

Eventually relocating to Spartanburg, South Carolina, Anna has been an invaluable resource in mental health, continuing her private practice while also leading grief support groups at the First Presbyterian Church. For over 13 years, she has provided a compassionate space for individuals coping with loss. Furthermore, her dedication extends to another long-standing group that has provided support for six years.

Anna remains proudly licensed in South Carolina, venerating her vocation with unwavering passion. As a founding member of the Board-Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work, she exemplifies the hallmark of excellence in her profession.
