AI BACKLOT Launches at the Shanghai International Film Festival: Merging AI with Cinema

AI BACKLOT: A New Era of Collaboration Between AI and Cinema

The 28th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) has made headlines with the launch of its groundbreaking initiative, AI BACKLOT. This innovative program, developed in collaboration with Hailuo AI (MiniMax), seeks to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into filmmaking, reshaping the industry's creative processes.

The Initiative

AI BACKLOT is designed to position AI not merely as a subject of academic study but as a vital player in the professional filmmaking arena. By collaborating directly with filmmakers, scriptwriters, and visual artists, the initiative aims to tackle key production challenges, such as character development, emotional storytelling, budget management, and overall production processes. This new frontier is expected to enhance creativity and efficiency in the filmmaking industry.

From June 14, 2026, the program kicked off with a global call for applications that lasted for 43 days, attracting nearly 500 candidates from seven different countries and regions. Following a rigorous selection process, four international creative teams were chosen to develop original short films titled Lightcone, N.I. (Neng Gong Zhi Ren), Tri-Head, and Bicycle Kids. Each team comprised both seasoned filmmakers and creators specialized in AI-generated content (AIGC), culminating in the production of their short films within a month, while meticulously documenting all creative and production stages.

Premiere and Exhibition

The official premiere, named AI BACKLOT Premiere: Creation Insights, took place on June 14 at the Crowne Plaza Shanghai JINJUE. During this event, the four short films were unveiled alongside the inaugural global report titled “Industry Observation1 Report on AI-Film Hybrid Creation”, crafted by the School of Theatre, Film, and Television of the China Communication University. This report offers unprecedented transparency into the decision-making processes influenced by AI in the creative realm, showcasing original film sequences, storyboards, AI prompts, and revision documents for a comprehensive view of AI-influenced production.

Prominent figures delivered opening speeches during the premiere. Tong Ying, deputy director of the Shanghai International Film and Television Festival Center, emphasized that AI BACKLOT is aimed at creating a concrete and exemplary model for the industry, asserting that digital technology is meant to enhance human creativity rather than replace it. Meanwhile, Huang Jianxin, a renowned filmmaker and founder of AI BACKLOT, highlighted the rapid evolution of AI technologies in cinema. He reaffirmed that the human touch in storytelling, aesthetic judgment, and creative vision remain integral to the fundamental essence of filmmaking.

Public Exhibition and Future Perspectives

The public exhibition for AI BACKLOT took place over two days at the Shanghai Film Arts Center on June 14 and 15. Attendees were given the opportunity to tour filming sets, participate in workshops, trial AI tools, and take part in a live production challenge titled “My Story.” This initiative aligns with the cultural policies of the new Lingang area, providing tangible Chinese case studies to contribute to the global discourse on AI-assisted filmmaking.

AI BACKLOT not only marks a significant step in the fusion of technology and art but also sets a precedent for future collaborations between human creativity and artificial intelligence. As filmmakers continue to push boundaries, the potential for AI to revolutionize both storytelling and production methodologies in cinema becomes increasingly tangible.

As the industry watches, the implications of AI on film will likely lead to new forms of storytelling and a deeper exploration of how technology can coexist with and augment human creativity.
