Hanwha Power Secures Approval for 22,000 CBM LNG Bunkering Vessel Design at GASTECH 2026

On September 15, 2026, Hanwha Power announced a significant milestone by obtaining the Approval in Principle (AiP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for the conceptual design of a 22,000 cubic meter LNG bunkering vessel. This recognition was made public during GASTECH 2026, the largest global exhibition for the gas and energy sector held in Bangkok, Thailand. The event showcased cutting-edge maritime and energy solutions from Hanwha and its subsidiaries, including Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Engines.

The 22,000 CBM LNG bunkering vessel is notable for its capability to transport not only LNG but also ammonia, which is emerging as a clean fuel alternative. This dual-fueling capacity enhances flexibility for ship operators while promoting compliance with stricter environmental regulations. Integral to the design is the use of advanced high-manganese steel for cargo containment, allowing for adaptability to future alternative fuels with minimal modifications.

Moreover, Hanwha has worked diligently to incorporate a hybrid electric propulsion system into the vessel's design. This innovative system allows for connection to onshore power supplies and includes an energy storage system (ESS), significantly reducing harmful emissions during docking and operations in coastal areas. By enhancing operational efficiency, the vessel aims to provide economic benefits while contributing to sustainable maritime practices.

At the GASTECH event, key figures from Hanwha Power, including Hoon-min Kim, head of the Marine Solutions Business Division, and Jong-kyu Hwang, vice president overseeing technical solutions, participated in the ceremony marking the presentation of the AiP certificate. They emphasized the importance of this approval in validating Hanwha’s technological reliability and commercial viability in the growing eco-friendly ship market.

In addition, the vessel's design integrates vital technologies such as dual-fuel generators, ESS systems, electric power integration, automated systems, and cargo handling systems. This comprehensive approach aims to maximize synergies within Hanwha’s engineering and procurement framework.
