Pokémon GO and Japan AED Foundation Partnership
In a groundbreaking initiative, Niantic, the creator of the immensely popular mobile game Pokémon GO, has entered into a partnership with the Japan AED Foundation. This alliance aims to integrate real-world Automated External Defibrillator (AED) locations into the game's virtual environment, beginning May 1, 2026. Initially, approximately 1,000 AED locations in Tokyo will be featured, with plans to expand to around 13,000 locations across Japan by mid-July 2026.
This unique initiative aims to leverage the gaming platform to elevate public awareness about the critical life-saving role of AEDs in emergencies. With approximately 670,000 AEDs currently installed throughout Japan, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of awareness and accessibility of these devices during critical situations. Heart-related incidents claim around 90,000 lives annually in Japan, and studies show that early access to AEDs and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can quadruple the chances of survival.
