Montefiore Einstein's Weiler Hospital Achieves Lantern Award
The
Jack D. Weiler Hospital at
Montefiore Einstein has recently been acknowledged with the prestigious
Lantern Award from the
Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). This award celebrates organizations that demonstrate high standards in patient care and emergency nursing excellence. Remarkably, this mark of distinction has been awarded for the second time to Montefiore, illustrating its ongoing commitment to quality and patient advocacy.
Each year, Weiler's Emergency Department (ED) serves nearly
70,000 patients. Its innovative redesign of triage processes, interdisciplinary meetings, professional development for staff, and the incorporation of new technologies were crucial in earning this recognition. According to Janine Llamzon, Vice President for Emergency Services at Montefiore Einstein, "Our ED is centered in the Bronx, where our team continually makes life-saving decisions. We bring hope and healing through teamwork, trust, and a shared purpose."
An integral part of this commitment to excellence includes mentorship initiatives that pair seasoned professionals with new or novice nurses in the department. This approach has cultivated essential clinical skills and built confidence for those entering the demanding field of emergency nursing. Emely Gonzalez, a nurse with eight years of experience at Weiler, expresses her gratitude towards the educational support she received, emphasizing, "Since high school, I dreamed of being an emergency nurse. Thanks to our supportive educators, I've achieved my master's degree in nursing. My colleagues have become family, and we share structured feedback sessions that foster mutual learning and support. Each day, I eagerly anticipate providing care during our patients' critical moments."
Moreover, Weiler's dedication to continuous learning has fostered clinical advancements. For instance, implementing a new patient positioning strategy, moving patients who can be seated to designated areas instead of lying in beds, enhances communication, speeds up care, and ensures greater privacy.
The innovations at Weiler are bolstered by an integrated electronic tracking panel that monitors test completion times, such as X-rays and CT scans, to ensure efficiency. Furthermore, real-time mobile scanning devices support precise medication dosage, empowering the ED staff to advocate effectively for their patients. Kayla McFarlane, the Clinical Director of the Emergency Department, stated, "Having these technologies at our fingertips allows us to advocate for our patients effectively. The transformative advancements we've made are inspiring. I'm excited to envision further possibilities for improvement."
It's noteworthy that the
Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) was also a recipient of the Lantern Award in 2024, highlighting the institution's broad commitment to quality health care across services. For more on the Lantern Award and its significance, visit the ENA's official website.
