A Unique Fusion of Art and Emergency Food Supplies in Japan for Earthquake Preparedness

The year 2026 marks a significant milestone as it commemorates the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, during which awareness and preparation for emergency food supplies have become essential for households. In response to rising concerns about impending natural disasters, Oisix, a subscription-based food delivery service, is launching a new emergency food product named 'Warm & Tasty Domestic Mackerel in Water'. Set to hit the market on March 2, 2026, this product uniquely incorporates artistic elements in its packaging, a collaboration with the internationally acclaimed Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in Niigata Prefecture.

The earthquake's risk remains prominent, with government statistics suggesting an 80% likelihood of a major earthquake within the next 30 years. Most households, however, are not adequately prepared; recent surveys show that only 45.8% have taken steps to stockpile food and daily necessities. In an effort to increase these figures, Oisix is integrating art into their emergency food initiatives, aiming to create a psychological ease in purchasing and preparing for the worst.

The mackerel can be enjoyed alongside Oisix's previous launch - 'Delicious Rice You Can Eat with Hot Water' - exemplifying the company’s commitment to combining quality food with practicality. Oisix has designed a series that encourages families to stock up on easy-to-prepare meals while also appreciating their aesthetic value. This artistic packaging was crafted by renowned artist Haruka Hara, who emphasizes a warm, vibrant portrayal of mackerel, conjuring an inviting dining atmosphere.

Part of the proceeds from this project will fund the management and maintenance of various artworks from the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, ensuring that the local economy benefits as well as fostering a community spirit surrounding art and food. This cooperative venture provides a way for consumers to contribute positively to community sustainability while also preparing for emergencies.

Oisix began this collaboration in 2017 as a response to local challenges, particularly in the aging and under-resourced agricultural sector in the Echigo-Tsumari region. By selling these products continuously, Oisix supports the operational funding of the Art Triennale, which is crucial in maintaining and repairing the artworks installed throughout the area. The initiative allows customers to engage in community support effortlessly, transforming normal grocery shopping into an opportunity for local assistance.

The successful merge of culinary delight and artistic expression initiated by Oisix has garnered recognition, being selected as a finalist in the 'Art Collaboration' category of the ART&BUSINESS AWARD 2025, sponsored by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and Forbes Japan.

Hara, the artist behind the design, remarked, 'This mackerel can be savored even in moments when cooking is challenging. You can enjoy it as is or pair it with rice, pasta, or bread — transforming any moment into a delightful dining experience.'

As for the emergency food product itself, it is crafted from freshly caught fish, expertly canned to ensure maximum taste and texture retention. With a balanced saltiness, it seamlessly facilitates various culinary applications, promoting not just nourishment but also gastronomic creativity in times of need. Sourced from Miyagi Prefecture and processed in Iwate, this mackerel continues to subtly aid in recovery efforts following the catastrophic earthquake.

This unique product becomes more than a mere emergency food item; it symbolizes a community's resilience, reminding consumers of the beauty of preparation without compromising flavor. With Oisix’s strategic blend of art and practicality, consumers not only prepare for emergencies but also celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of Japan, all while making a meaningful impact on local communities in need.
