Nationwide Walk4Hearing Kicks Off to Support Americans with Hearing Loss
The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) is set to launch its 2025 Walk4Hearing series next month, aiming to shed light on the growing issue of hearing loss that affects millions of Americans. This initiative will take place in 20 cities across the United States beginning in May, culminating in November, as a way not only to raise funds but also to foster a sense of community and support for those dealing with this often-overlooked condition.
Hearing loss is often described as a “silent epidemic,” affecting approximately one in seven Americans. Individuals of all ages are now receptive to this invisible ailment, making it crucial for people who experience any level of hearing impairment to join the movement, either by participating in a walk, volunteering, or donating.
The inaugural event is scheduled for May 3 in Tampa, Florida, with additional events rolling out throughout the year. According to Barbara Kelley, the Executive Director of HLAA, “These walks are not merely physical events; they serve as a beacon of hope and support for individuals with hearing loss in their local communities.” She adds that each event unites families and friends under a shared cause, empowering them to raise funds and awareness regarding the significance of hearing health.
Kelley further emphasizes how necessary it is to address hearing health as a fundamental aspect of overall wellness. Even slight hearing impairments can significantly impact various facets of life, including day-to-day activities, interpersonal relationships, and employment prospects.
Among those sharing their experiences at these events is a family whose daughter, Kiyomi, was diagnosed with hearing loss at just three months old. They found solace and affirmation by participating in the Houston Walk4Hearing, known as HLAA’s longest-running walk, where they encountered other families who shared similar journeys. Such narratives highlight the importance of community support in navigating the challenges of hearing loss.
Many of the Walk4Hearing events ofer complimentary hearing screenings, providing participants access to hearing care professionals and discussions on assistive technologies, along with resources from local HLAA chapters and other nonprofit organizations dedicated to advancing hearing health. Since the initiation of Walk4Hearing in 2006, the event has successfully raised $20 million for crucial programs and resources.
In 2024, prominent figures like Robert Engelke, founder of CapTel, Inc., and Starkey’s president and CEO Brandon Sawalich will serve as honorary co-chairs for the Walk4Hearing, indicating the increasing acknowledgment of the significance of hearing loss and the necessity for solutions.
