North Riyadh and Salma Geoparks Join UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network
The North Riyadh Geopark and Salma Geopark have been officially recognized by UNESCO as part of its Global Geoparks Network, a significant achievement for Saudi Arabia. This designation reflects the country's commitment to preserving its natural heritage and promoting sustainable development.
This recognition comes after a thorough selection process by UNESCO, which evaluated the management practices of the geoparks. These parks emphasize the balance between conservation, education, and sustainable development, all while actively involving local communities. Dr. Khaled bin Abdullah Al-Abdulkader, General Director of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification (NCVC), expressed his pride in this achievement that underscores Saudi Arabia's dedication to protecting its natural and historical heritage.
Dr. Al-Abdulkader attributed this success to the unwavering support from the country's leaders in enhancing environmental initiatives and promoting sustainability. He highlighted the NCVC's efforts in preserving Saudi Arabia’s unique landscapes, particularly its geological sites, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals outlined in Vision 2030.
Engineer Hussam bin Zuhair Al-Turki, Senior Director of the Saudi Geoparks Initiative, emphasized that the addition of North Riyadh Geopark and Salma Geopark is a moment of national pride. He praised this milestone, reinforcing not only Saudi Arabia's commitment to preserving its cultural and natural identity but also its position as a leader in global natural heritage conservation and sustainable development.
With this designation, Saudi Arabia reaffirms its dedication to global environmental efforts. The newly recognized geoparks are set to become key destinations for both local and international visitors, providing opportunities to explore the Kingdom's geological wonders while fostering scientific and cultural awareness regarding the importance of preserving geological and natural diversity.
Beyond geological tourism, these geoparks play an essential role in the sustainable management of natural resources while contributing to local economic development by creating jobs and promoting environmental education. This initiative reflects a collaborative effort among governmental entities, the private sector, and non-profit organizations, enhancing Saudi Arabia's contribution to national and sustainable development goals.
