Nara Prefecture Takes a Sustainable Leap with Biodegradable Turf

In a pioneering effort to promote sustainability, Mizuno Corporation, in partnership with Kaneka Corporation, has introduced a biodegradable artificial turf called "Re Green Grass UMI" in Japan's Nara Prefecture. This initiative marks the first adoption of such environmentally friendly turf by a local municipality, specifically at the disaster prevention park "Tomo Pa! Tawaramoto" in the city of Tawaramoto. The event, which took place on July 31, included a special artificial turf laying activity aimed at families.

Community Engagement and Innovation

The Tawaramoto town administration is actively pursuing the "Tawaramoto ReBORN Project," which aims to revitalize the community by fostering new industries. This innovative project focuses on attracting startup companies that engage in bio-manufacturing, bringing new technologies and ideas to life.

The installation of Mizuno's biodegradable turf in the covered plaza at "Tomo Pa! Tawaramoto" aims to create a comfortable space for multigenerational interactions. As part of the installation, a community event was hosted, allowing 22 participants to engage in the laying of the turf. The event provided an educational opportunity about the materials used in biodegradable turf and raised awareness about environmental issues such as marine plastic waste and microplastics.

Addressing Environmental Concerns

Artificial turf can sometimes shed particles that unintentionally end up in oceans, contributing to the microplastic pollution problem, which can severely impact marine ecosystems. Mizuno's collaboratively developed biodegradable turf boasts a texture and durability similar to conventional artificial turf, but with a crucial difference—it degrades into water and CO2 when it comes into contact with seawater, thus offering an eco-friendly solution.

Green Planet, the foundation of this project, is a 100% biomass-derived biodegradable polymer that degrades easily into CO2 and water both in soil and seawater, playing a significant role in addressing the worldwide issue of plastic pollution.
