Exploring the Captivating World of Uniforms in Photography Exhibition 'SCHOOL GIRL...' in Shinjuku

Exhibition Overview

The esteemed Shinjuku Kitamura Camera Store, directed by President Tomohiko Yamazaki, is hosting a captivating photography exhibition titled 'SCHOOL GIRL...' from December 15 to 21, 2025. This exhibition will feature the works of two emerging photographers, Kyoshin Nakajima and Nana Na Mi, both of whom have studied under renowned photographer Hiroki Aoyama. The common theme of this exhibition—uniforms—will showcase their unique artistic expressions within the same space.

Artistic Expression Through the Theme of Uniforms

Both Nakajima and Na Mi were deeply inspired by Aoyama's iconic 'School Girl Complex' series, which guided them in exploring the powerful symbolism and anonymity that uniforms represent. They approach the theme from their own youthful perspectives and innovative techniques, capturing the allure and multifaceted nature of uniforms.

Kyoshin Nakajima's Work: 'Fantasy Night Imagery'

Nakajima will present a new piece titled 'Fantasy Night Imagery', derived from his previous work '#Tokyo Night Images'. His narrative revolves around two girls, Kuro and Aka, who carry diverging destinies yet share a common fate—their lives intertwined yet never converging. Through their stories, Nakajima aims to illustrate the light and shadows surrounding uniforms, bringing forth their anonymity and symbolism.

Nana Na Mi's Work: 'Sublimation'

Nana Na Mi will showcase her multi-exposure series titled 'Sublimation', which grants significance to the photographs often considered 'unselected' during the shooting process. By focusing on the subjects adorned in uniforms, she delves into the emotions and memories lingering behind the captured moments, redefining their essence as art.

Though Nakajima and Na Mi’s perspectives differ, a shared philosophy resonates throughout the exhibition: uncovering stories that photography has yet to capture through the lens of uniforms. We invite you to explore their distinctive interpretations and the subtle nuances of emotions evoked by uniforms in this alluring exhibition.

Artist Statements

Kyoshin Nakajima:

'Fantasy Night Imagery' represents a spin-off from his previous series, '#Tokyo Night Images'. Set against the backdrop of nighttime Tokyo, Nakajima blends reality with fantasy, drawing inspiration from the worlds of anime and manga. The protagonists, Kuro and Aka, though their paths never intersect, bear the weight of a shared destiny—raising the question of what that destiny might be.

Nana Na Mi:

The work 'Sublimation' aims to shed light on photographs that often go unnoticed, infusing them with new meaning and significance. Inspired by her own frustrations and anxieties about not being able to capture the perfect shot, she questions how many images one must take to select just one perfect photograph. Amidst dozens or hundreds shot, what becomes of those left behind? 'Sublimation' highlights these overlooked photographs, elevating their status to art through nuanced representation.
