Wells Fargo Partners with Habitat for Humanity to Tackle Housing Affordability
In a significant move announced at the Iowa State Fair, Wells Fargo has pledged a
$1.5 million investment to
Habitat for Humanity, focusing on innovative solutions for affordable housing, particularly in rural communities across the United States. The partnership aims to address the growing challenges of housing affordability that many families face today.
Advancing Housing Solutions in Rural Areas
During the announcement, Jason Rosenberg, the head of Public Affairs at Wells Fargo, highlighted the urgency of the housing affordability crisis affecting Iowa and beyond. He stated, "Through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity, we're advancing growth-focused solutions so communities across the nation, including greater Des Moines and rural Iowa, can continue to thrive."
With a stark housing shortage plaguing the nation, families are increasingly finding it challenging to remain in their long-established communities. This initiative will leverage advanced housing options, particularly
modular construction, which involves preparing components of homes in a factory setting before transporting them for assembly at a permanent site. Such an approach not only speeds up construction and eases logistical hurdles but also adheres to local and state building codes, ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and durability.
Investment Breakdown and Community Impact
As part of the overall investment,
$1 million is allocated to Habitat for Humanity International to promote housing innovation through modular construction techniques. Additionally,
$500,000 will support the operations of Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, focusing on expanding affordable housing solutions across central Iowa, including towns like Perry and Indianola.
J. Edwin Hensley, director of U.S. construction at Habitat for Humanity, expressed optimism about this partnership, noting, "Along with our traditional home building model, modular homes are an added solution to the housing affordability crisis. This is a national push. With the support of Wells Fargo, we have the opportunity to prove this can work in rural, suburban, and urban communities."
Beyond financial assistance, Wells Fargo employees have actively engaged with the local Habitat affiliates, volunteering their time at the state fair to help build wheelchair ramps for residents, emphasizing the importance of making homes accessible for individuals with disabilities.
Creating Stability and Strengthening Communities
According to Lance Henning, CEO of Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, “Homeownership creates stability for families and strengthens communities.” He emphasized that for many Iowans, homeownership can feel out of reach, and this influx of investment will play a critical role in generating new affordable housing opportunities both in Iowa and across the nation.
Community leaders echo similar sentiments about the significance of this investment. Congresswoman Ashley Hinson remarked, "This generous investment to Habitat for Humanity will make a real difference for families in rural communities like Indianola and Perry. In smaller towns, every new home means another family can put down roots and build a future in the community they love and call home."
A Long-standing Commitment to Affordable Housing
For over three decades, Wells Fargo and Habitat for Humanity have collaborated to enhance housing access and contribute to building more prosperous communities globally. Since 2015, Wells Fargo and the Wells Fargo Foundation have notably contributed over
$105 million to support Habitat’s initiatives, including programs for new home construction, repairs for older adults, and revitalization efforts in neighborhoods.
Habitat for Humanity has been making strides since its inception in 1976, with a mission to ensure everyone has a safe and affordable place to live. This recent investment is a testament to the sustained effort towards providing innovative housing solutions tailored to meet the pressing needs of communities nationwide. Together, they continue to build homes, foster communities, and instill hope for a better future.
