background information and cultural anecdotes related to each mineral. With an editorial contribution by
Kouichi Monma, head of the Earth Sciences Research Group at the National Museum of Nature and Science, readers can trust they are receiving scientifically accurate information. The book also provides insights into the names of each mineral in
ten different countries, complete with pronunciation guides.
A Message from the Author
In the author's words,
Ai Umeda, the inspiration for her creative process stems from the structures found in nature. She believes that minerals beautifully juxtapose orderly crystalline shapes with the randomness of nature, making them rich subjects for artistic exploration.
“In this book, rather than treating minerals as mere specimens, I sought to depict their allure and characteristics through 'characters,' weaving in explanations alongside the illustrations. Each mineral was thoroughly researched to ensure that readers could enjoy both the artistic and educational aspects.”
Her goal is to inspire readers, fueling their intellectual curiosity and creativity through this engaging blend of information and art.
