Innovative 3D Printing Seminar at Okayama University
On August 5, 2025, Okayama University hosted an engaging seminar titled "First-Timer's 3D Printer Experience Seminar: Bringing Ideas to Life" at the Tsushima Campus. This event is part of the 'Okayama Digital Innovation Launch Platform (OI-Start)' aimed at tackling local issues and fostering creativity through open innovation.
Objective and Overview
In this collaborative initiative between industry, academia, and government, high school students and local business professionals were invited to explore the exciting world of digital technology. The seminar focused on hands-on learning, guiding participants through the basics of 3D printing and modeling, ultimately equipping them with the skills to generate innovative ideas.
The event welcomed around 100 attendees, including students from local high schools, university students, and educators. Participants were immersed in practical sessions led by experts, highlighting the significance of 3D printing in various fields.
Morning Session: Understanding 3D Printing
The day began with a presentation by Yuya Shimizu, a PhD student in the Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science at Okayama University, and the representative of MOSAdemy. His lecture provided insights into the potential of 3D printing technology, coupled with a practical CAD modeling workshop. Participants learned essential techniques in 3D modeling and created custom nameplates embedded with NFC tags, which were later 3D printed at the Okayama Tech Garage (OTG).
Afternoon Session: Ideation Workshop
The afternoon featured an 'Ideathon' facilitated by Kazuma Ikesaka, another PhD student and former head of the Data Science Club at Okayama University. The theme focused on 'Designing the Future with Imaginary 3D Printing Materials.' Participants of various ages collaborated in lively discussions, crafting unique ideas that broke traditional boundaries.
This session was a testament to the power of collaboration across different age groups and backgrounds. Many students shared innovative concepts, showcasing the potential for real-world applications of their ideas. The workshop demonstrated how open discussions can lead to the birth of groundbreaking innovations.
Future Initiatives
Moving forward, OI-Start aims to continue fostering collaborative environments that transcend industry and educational boundaries, driving innovation in the region. The seminar was part of a broader initiative funded by Japan's Cabinet Office aimed at enhancing innovation within local universities. Attendees are encouraged to engage with OI-Start for future opportunities.
Conclusion
The seminar at Okayama University served as a platform for nurturing creativity in the next generation of innovators. By intersecting education, industry, and community involvement, it highlighted the invaluable role of open innovation in addressing regional issues. Okayama University continues to lead such initiatives, fostering an environment conducive to innovation and collaboration, as evidenced by this successful event.
