Education Couture Launches LIT CHICAGO Advisory Council to Enhance Literacy Among Youth

In recognition of National Family Literacy Month, Education Couture has proudly announced the establishment of its LIT CHICAGO Advisory Council. This initiative, which aims to enhance literacy among youth in Chicago, will be led by prominent figures in the community, including award-winning playwright Toussaint Daniels and Parenting Podcaster Terry Roseland, founder of The Village Chi. Their appointment marks the kickoff of a broader citywide literacy platform that seeks to reshape how young individuals engage with reading and vocabulary.

LIT CHICAGO is designed to address significant literacy challenges among young people, particularly in minority communities. Recent statistics from the Chicago Public Schools indicate that reading proficiency among Black students stands at about 34%, while Hispanic students report a slightly higher rate of 38%. While these numbers reflect overall proficiency, they do not capture the crucial aspect of vocabulary knowledge which is vital for comprehensive reading skills. Thus, LIT CHICAGO aims not only to improve reading skills but also to enrich vocabulary and inspire a love for literature among students.

The vision of LIT CHICAGO is to cultivate an environment where the joys of reading are celebrated. Ruckiya Ross, founder of Education Couture, passionately asserts, "Our mission is to encourage young people to view books and words as intellectual treasures." She emphasized the organization’s commitment to inclusivity, stating that the initiative will benefit every child across diverse backgrounds, irrespective of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

Both Toussaint Daniels and Terry Roseland bring unique perspectives to this initiative, with Daniels offering rich insights from his background in storytelling and theater, while Roseland contributes his experience in community mentorship and engagement. Together, their diverse experiences position them well to guide the council in developing impactful literacy programming that resonates with the youth.

The council’s efforts will focus on providing opportunities for young people to 'invest' in their vocabulary and learning through reading. By actively encouraging students to explore literature that interests them, LIT CHICAGO aims to elicit an enthusiasm for reading which can translate into measurable achievements. Students will be recognized for their progress as they explore new words and books, thus celebrating their learning journeys.

Education Couture, a Chicago-based nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering creativity and engagement in education, has strategically positioned LIT CHICAGO as a cultural and educational movement vital for the city's youth. By merging educational efforts with elements of art, fashion, and music, the organization strives to redefine learning, making it as appealing as creative expression.

As LIT CHICAGO evolves, further announcements regarding additional members of the Advisory Council are expected, which will help expand the initiative's reach and effectiveness. The success of this program represents an essential step toward combatting literacy disparities and fostering a generation of empowered, literate young people who can navigate the world around them with confidence.

Education Couture invites other stakeholders in the community to participate in this important initiative. Together, they can create pathways for thorough literacy engagement and provide every child with the opportunity to experience the transformative power of words and literature. By fostering a love for reading, LIT CHICAGO is paving the way for a bright future where literacy contributes to personal and collective success.
