American Academy of Dermatology Welcomes New Leadership
On March 7, 2025, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) installed four new officers and four board members at the conclusion of its Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida. This transition marks a noteworthy moment for the AAD, an organization representing nearly 21,000 dermatologists dedicated to the treatment and diagnosis of skin, hair, and nail conditions.
New Officers
Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD, ascends to the role of president, bringing a wealth of experience to the position. Dr. Taylor previously served as the Vice President of AAD from 2020 to 2021. She holds the title of Bernett Johnson Professor of Dermatology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Taylor's extensive background includes an undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a medical degree from Harvard University. Her career highlights include multiple leadership roles within AAD and receiving the John Kenney Jr., MD Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
Kevin D. Cooper, MD, FAAD, has taken on the vice presidency for the next year. He is a respected professor and the Henri Pell Junod, Jr. Chair of Dermatology at Cleveland's University Hospitals. With a medical degree from the University of Florida, he has held various esteemed positions within the AAD, including serving on its Board of Directors.
In the roles of secretary-treasurer and assistant secretary-treasurer are Keyvan Nouri, MD, MBA, FAAD, and Sabra Sullivan, MD, PhD, FAAD, respectively. Dr. Nouri is a Tenured Professor and has a notable record of service within the Academy, while Dr. Sullivan comes with considerable expertise in legislation and health policy, having chaired multiple significant committees.
New Board Members
The AAD also welcomes four new board members who will serve four-year terms. Among them is Andrew F. Alexis, MD, MPH, FAAD, a professor at Weill Cornell University. Dr. Alexis has an impressive medical pedigree and has been actively involved in editing esteemed journals and serving in dermatological associations.
A. Shadi Kourosh, MD, MPH, FAAD, serves as the director of community health at Massachusetts General Hospital and is an associate professor at Harvard. Her leadership extends to vital initiatives against human trafficking through dermatological advocacy.
Another addition, Seth L. Matarasso, MD, FAAD, holds a clinical professorship at the University of California, San Francisco, and has a distinguished background in dermatologic surgery. He has previously presided over the California Society of Dermatology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.
Lastly, Joseph Merola, MD, MSc, FAAD, is the Chair of Dermatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. His extensive training includes multiple residencies and fellowships, making him a valuable asset to the AAD Board.
