XGRIDS Revolutionizes 3D Media Production at IBC 2026 with 3DGS Technology

At the IBC 2026 event held in Amsterdam, XGRIDS, a company specializing in spatial intelligence, unveiled groundbreaking advancements in 3D media production. With the integration of 3D Gaussian Splatting technology, production teams can now seamlessly merge photorealistic locations into their virtual production workflows.

Traditionally, transforming real-world filming locations into digital environments has involved a labor-intensive and time-consuming reconstruction process. However, XGRIDS aims to simplify this task through the use of cutting-edge spatial scanners like the Lixel K2, along with spatial cameras such as PortalCam. These tools effectively capture intricate spatial details and visual information, which can then be processed locally using Lixel CyberColor (LCC). The resulting 3DGS environments can be imported into Unreal Engine via the XGRIDS LCC plugin, streamlining the transition from physical film sets to digital production.

During the event, CM Fey, the product manager at XGRIDS, presented how this innovative workflow can be integrated into existing production pipelines. The ability to creatively repurpose captured environments transcends traditional uses. Once a photorealistic, navigable 3DGS scene is incorporated into the production framework, it can serve as a foundation for scenography, camera blocking, and extends to applications in XR and ICVFX. Rather than viewing spatial capture as a mere visualization step, this new workflow transforms physical locations into invaluable digital production assets that can be reused and modified according to creative needs.

The workflow also supports vital production platforms such as Pixotope, Aximmetry, Disguise, and nDisplay. Following XGRIDS’ demonstration, filmmaker and VFX supervisor Amir Ovadia Steklov delivered a talk titled “3DGS in Film Production,” showcasing his experience capturing a spaceship film set with PortalCam and integrating that 3DGS environment into a cinematic VFX workflow.

This innovative approach is already gaining traction within the media and entertainment sector. PortalCam has won accolades in four categories at the 2026 NAB Show Product of the Year Awards. Additionally, the South Korean broadcaster SBS successfully integrated 3DGS and XR technologies into their live news broadcasts utilizing the LCC plugin for Unreal Engine and Pixotope. XGRIDS also introduced LCC Scan, a solution enabling local 3DGS models to be created directly on iPhones, allowing users to capture people, objects, and spaces as interactive 3D content.

As spatial capture becomes more accessible, the transition from real environments into digital workflows is expected to be smoother. XGRIDS plays a pivotal role in bridging the physical and digital realms, unlocking new possibilities for capturing, representing, and utilizing reality in media production. This significant advancement in technology not only enhances the creative process but also opens up new avenues for storytelling and visual experiences, setting a new standard for the industry.
