Linc Housing and American Family Housing Celebrate New Affordable Housing in Anaheim
In a bid to combat housing insecurity and homelessness, Linc Housing, a dedicated non-profit organization, in collaboration with American Family Housing, officially opened the Azure community in Anaheim, California, on May 14, 2026. This new project, part of the statewide Project Homekey initiative, features 89 affordable and supportive apartments designed to assist those who have experienced homelessness or are at risk of becoming homeless. The event was attended not only by representatives from both housing organizations but also by officials from the City of Anaheim and the newly settled residents themselves.
The Azure community is named after the Azure butterfly, a symbol representing change and new beginnings, which perfectly aligns with the goals of this housing project. With its completion, it marks Linc Housing's fourth and final Project Homekey development in the region. The aim behind Project Homekey is straightforward yet ambitious: to transform underutilized properties into permanent and affordable supportive housing, thereby addressing the pressing need for housing stability in California.
"The opening of 87 permanent supportive homes is a significant milestone for us, and it reflects the commitment of the Governor's forward-thinking investment in Homekey," said Gustavo Velasquez, Director of the California Department of Housing and Community Development. The location of Azure is strategically chosen, providing residents with access to essential services and transportation, helping ensure that they have not only a safe place to live but also pathways to opportunities for growth.
This development is situated on the site of a former Studio 6 Motel, which was previously used as interim housing in 2022. The transformation process involved comprehensive renovations, where the existing 119 rooms were remodeled into a total of 67 studios and 20 one-bedroom apartments. Beyond just housing, the Azure community incorporates a variety of shared spaces, including a community room for gatherings, case management offices to provide support services, a central courtyard for outdoor activities, a community garden, and even a dog park, catering to the holistic needs of its residents.
Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken expressed her enthusiasm about the project, highlighting the dignity and empowerment this community presents to its residents. "The promise of what is possible in Anaheim is being realized through Azure. Here, we offer a supportive housing environment in an inviting and beautiful setting, where the power of a home goes beyond just providing shelter. It transforms lives," she stated.
The necessary funding for this ambitious project came primarily from the State of California’s Project Homekey program, with additional support from the City of Anaheim and the Housing and Homelessness Incentive Program funded by CalOptima Health. Financial backing also included contributions from Capital One and Freddie Mac, while Raymond James handled the syndication of tax credit equity. Moreover, for those residents who require financial assistance, project-based rental assistance vouchers are provided through the Anaheim Housing Authority.
The American Family Housing organization plays a pivotal role within the Azure community by offering residents comprehensive wraparound services and case management. These services are indispensable, as they include mental and physical health support, employment counseling, job placement assistance, educational programs, substance use counseling, financial management aid, and connection to further community resources. Meanwhile, the Linc Housing resident services team is proactive in facilitating activities that foster community bonding, holistic wellness, workforce development, and financial literacy.
Designed by YM Architects and constructed by Sun Country Builders, the transition from interim to permanent housing at Azure began in February 2024 and has seen all homes fully occupied. Importantly, all units currently cater to households earning at or below 30% of the area median income, thus fulfilling a crucial need for affordable housing in the area.
