Barry Sonnenfeld to Lead Children's Institute Gala Honoring Michele & Rob Reiner

Barry Sonnenfeld to Host Children's Institute's Cape & Gown Gala

On November 8, the Children's Institute (CII) will celebrate its 120th anniversary with a grand event in Beverly Hills, where the acclaimed filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld will serve as the host. This special gala not only highlights the legacy of the Institute but also honors the profound contributions made by Michele and Rob Reiner.

Barry Sonnenfeld, known for his distinguished career as a director and producer, takes center stage for this momentous occasion. His remarkable work includes popular films such as Get Shorty and The Addams Family, along with the beloved Men in Black trilogy. He shares a personal connection to the honorees, having introduced Rob Reiner and Michele, making him a fitting choice to preside over the evening.

Joining Sonnenfeld will be a lineup of notable personalities, including Jaime Lee Curtis, who will be awarded the inaugural Michele & Rob Reiner Champion for Change Award. Presenting this award will be Jake Reiner, the Reiners’ son, further cementing the personal nature of the event. The gala will also feature a performance by the seven-time Grammy Award winner John Mayer and an appearance by comedian Chelsea Handler, adding to the evening’s entertainment.

Martine Singer, the president and CEO of CII, remarked on Sonnenfeld’s selection to host, saying, "Barry is the perfect host for an evening that honors the humanitarianism of my sister and brother-in-law." She emphasized the deep ties between Sonnenfeld and the Reiner family, noting their long-standing friendship.

Sonnenfeld expressed his sentiments on the Reiners, stating, "Rob and Michele were incredible human beings with an extraordinary capacity to love and serve others. I miss them more than words can say, but I'll try." This tribute highlights the significance of their legacy, as the gala aims to elevate awareness about CII's mission and the ongoing support it provides.

Founded in 1906, CII has been a cornerstone for children and families in Los Angeles, offering essential services such as early childhood education and mental health support. The organization currently impacts approximately 30,000 children and families annually, contributing to their healing and success in life.

The proceeds from the Cape & Gown Gala will directly support the organization’s initiatives to facilitate children's recovery from trauma, encourage academic achievement, and promote overall health and economic mobility.
