11th Global Mazu Culture Forum: A Celebration of Maritime Traditions
The coastal city of Putian in Fujian, located in the southeast of China, is gearing up to host the 11th Global Mazu Culture Forum from October 31 to November 2, 2026. This significant gathering brings together participants from 47 countries and regions, fostering international dialogue on the rich cultural heritage surrounding the goddess Mazu, revered for her role in maritime traditions and navigation.
Events and Highlights
The forum will kick off with a central forum comprising ten thematic sessions, along with secondary events taking place across 13 different venues. This rich offering not only aims to enhance understanding of Mazu's cultural significance but also to promote global cooperation through various educational and cultural initiatives.
One of the key presentations will be the unveiling of the 2.0 version of the Maritime Conservation Mass Circulation Model (MaCOM), an innovative solution independently developed by China. This model is designed to promote sustainable practices in maritime activities and will have its source code made publicly accessible, fostering transparency and collaboration globally.
Innovation in Weather Forecasting
A landmark highlight of the forum will be the launch of a smart integrated terminal, aimed at deploying the MAZU weather early warning solution in Sri Lanka. This initiative, facilitated by Chinese meteorological authorities, has already seen successful implementations in countries such as Pakistan, Ethiopia, and the Solomon Islands. With over 50 additional nations benefiting from this cloud-based platform, this event marks a significant step forward in enhancing global disaster response capabilities.
Cultural Exchange and Initiatives
In addition to weather forecasting technologies, the forum will also spotlight cultural exchange activities, notably through a sub-forum hosted in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This session will discuss Mazu's influence on Brazilian legislation related to the Mazu Day celebration and launch an initiative aimed at fostering university exchanges focused on Mazu worship and maritime civilization.
Furthermore, various thematic forums will delve into pressing issues such as maritime economics, ecological conservation, and the evolving roles of women in these domains. Attendees can look forward to the release of significant publications including the 2026 report on Chinese maritime culture and a white paper outlining strategies for quality ecological island development.
Mangrove Conservation and Protection Fund
Important discussions will aim at advancing a framework agreement for the conservation and restoration of mangroves, alongside the establishment of a fund dedicated to the protection of Mazu's cultural heritage. Such initiatives reflect a deep commitment to both cultural and ecological sustainability.
Cultural Festival
Coinciding with the forum is the 28th Cultural Tourism Festival dedicated to Mazu, which promises to showcase a live-streamed opening ceremony celebrating traditional sacrificial rituals associated with Mazu, recognized as part of the national intangible cultural heritage. Additionally, an original dance drama focused on Mazu will have its world premiere in Putian, further enriching the cultural offerings of the event.
This forum is anticipated not only to honor Mazu's legacy but also to inspire collaborative efforts that transcend borders, reflecting the true spirit of maritime culture and international unity. As participants gather in Putian, they embark on a journey to celebrate the past, engage with the present, and pave the way for a sustainable future around the goddess Mazu's cultural significance.
