Okayama University's Multicultural Collaborative Learning Initiatives Gain Momentum Through Special Seminar

Okayama University's Multicultural Collaborative Learning Initiatives Gain Momentum

On November 4, 2025, Okayama University organized a hybrid seminar titled "Practicing and Ensuring Quality in International Collaborative Learning: Visualizing Learning through ICL Rubrics". The event, part of the university's multicultural collaborative learning project, saw the participation of approximately 100 faculty members and staff. Invited speaker Kazuko Suematsu, Vice President of Tohoku University in charge of international exchange, delivered insights on the significance and practice of international collaborative learning, a key focus area of the university's efforts.

The seminar began with opening remarks from Makoto Suga, a board member responsible for education, and Vice President of Okayama University, followed by Suematsu's comprehensive introduction to multicultural collaborative learning. She addressed the crucial question: "Why is international collaborative learning important today?" and elaborated on the framework and practicalities surrounding multicultural cooperation in academia.

Suematsu highlighted Tohoku University's journey in curriculum internationalization and its various initiatives within the multicultural collaborative learning project, shedding light on the development process and usage of the international collaborative learning rubrics (ICL Rubrics). These rubrics aim to assess multicultural learning systematically, which is an urgent topic for Okayama University as well.

Four key areas of evaluation were presented by Suematsu, focusing on essential skills: the capacity for self-growth, the ability to build relationships, the skill to collaborate, and the capability to solve problems. These topics were effectively broken down into simpler terms, making them more accessible and relatable to participants. The discussion also included a Q&A segment, where attendees asked how to overcome language barriers that often hinder multicultural collaborative efforts. In response, Suematsu emphasized that while language proficiency tests like TOEIC could measure language skills, it is fundamental to focus on the deeper aspects of learning that such tests might not fully capture.

This seminar reaffirmed the significance and challenges of multicultural collaborative learning, providing faculty with valuable insights that can enhance their teaching methodologies. Moving forward, Okayama University is committed to advancing its multicultural collaborative projects which will further internationalize the institution. The university seeks ongoing support from the community as it continues to establish itself as a distinctive research university at the heart of regional development.

The faculty and staff left the seminar with a renewed sense of purpose and motivation to contribute towards a more interconnected and collaborative educational environment. Okayama University's initiatives in promoting multiculturalism align with its broader mission of fostering global education and partnerships, responding adeptly to the challenges of the contemporary educational landscape. As Japan emphasizes its commitment to international collaboration and higher education excellence, Okayama University stands firm at the forefront, ready to embrace future challenges in the realm of global education.
