Experience the National Archives: Special Tours for Students in Japan

Explore the National Archives - A Special Student Tour

The National Archives of Japan, located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, is set to host an exciting tour designed specifically for university students on February 16, 2024. This initiative aims to provide participants with firsthand experiences of the archives and deepen their understanding of the institution's vital functions and collections.

What to Expect on the Tour

The event will feature several engaging activities where students can not only observe but also participate in unique experiences within the archives.

1. Backstage Tour

Participants will be granted exclusive access to areas usually off-limits to the public. The tour will include:
  • - Library and Repository Access: Gain insights into how documents are stored.
  • - Restoration Room Demonstrations: Observe skilled restorers at work as they preserve valuable artifacts for future generations.
  • - Digital Archive Introduction: Learn how to use the National Archives' digital databases for research and exploration.

2. Document Viewing Experience

Students will have the unique opportunity to handle original historical documents and ancient manuscripts. This interactive experience allows participants to engage closely with the materials.

3. Create Your Own Kaō (Seal) Badge

Delve into Japan's historical art by learning about the seals (kaō) used by historical figures. Participants can create their own kaō using their names or chosen characters and turn them into a badge. This memorable keepsake can be taken home as a souvenir of the day.
