Exploring Biodiversity: Children Engage in Rice Field Investigations in Hokuto City

Exploring Biodiversity in the Rice Fields of Hokuto City

On June 28, 2026, from 8 AM to 11 AM, a unique event will take place in the rice fields of Hokuto City, Takane Town, where children will participate in a biodiversity investigation. Organized by Palsystem Yamanashi Nagano, this initiative aims to foster an understanding of environmental conservation through the lens of farming.

The rice fields involved in this investigation are managed by the producer group "Otentosan" under the guidance of Mr. Inada. These fields are cultivated without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, reflecting a commitment to ethical farming practices that respect both the environment and human health.

In contrast to conventional farming, which often relies heavily on chemicals, this organic approach allows a diverse range of organisms to thrive within the rice paddy ecosystem. Previous investigations have uncovered approximately 30 different species, including microorganisms, insects, and amphibians, all coexisting within this rich environment.

Participants will have the opportunity to step into the rice fields, actively observing and engaging with these diverse species. This hands-on experience will highlight the importance of sustainable rice farming practices that harmonize with nature. Youngsters will not only learn about the biodiversity present in their local environment but also understand the crucial role that ethical farming plays in safeguarding this variety for future generations.
