Scars to STARs Day 2025: A Global Initiative to Combat Mental Health Issues
On May 16, 2025, a significant global event known as Scars to STARs Day will take place, organized by the STAR Network. This initiative aims to unify survivors, policymakers, and mental health providers to advocate for trauma recovery and mental health awareness. This virtual event is available free of charge and marks an important occasion as part of Mental Health Awareness Month.
The founder of The Kennedy Forum, Patrick J. Kennedy, will deliver a keynote address at the event, discussing the themes of parity, policy, and progress in mental health care. His speech will be drawn from his critically acclaimed 2024 book,
Profiles in Mental Health Courage, offering insights and solutions to the pressing challenges in mental well-being today.
This year’s Scars to STARs Day is particularly timely, as the world grapples with increasing rates of trauma, suicide, and mental illness. Over 70 countries will participate, showcasing a diverse roster of national and international thought leaders, who will focus on offering trauma-informed solutions and discussions designed to foster healing.
Dr. Jamie Huysman, the founder of STAR Network, emphasizes that this initiative is not limited to the United States but serves as a global blueprint for scalable, trauma-informed recovery. Governments in nations such as Israel, Ukraine, Colombia, and Kenya have already begun to implement STAR Network's trauma fellowship programs, which are specifically tailored to help citizens, first responders, and healthcare workers build mental resilience in the face of systemic challenges.
“
This is about creating a model for recovery that can be utilized anywhere around the world,” said Dr. Huysman.
“We believe in making these resources available without any cost, as trauma knows no boundaries. Our goal is healing, not profit.”
In support of this mission, STAR Network has partnered with numerous organizations across the United States. Collaborators include Caron Treatment Centers, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and PACEs Connection, among others, which help promote awareness and education regarding positive and adverse childhood experiences.
Recognizing the urgent need for collective action, STAR Network has made five media credentials available for prominent journalists to cover the event firsthand. This invites coverage from a range of sources, from local health clinics to large organizations and media outlets. The aim is to ensure the message of hope and healing resonates across every community.
As the mental health crisis continues to rise, now is the time to take action. Whether at home or in healthcare facilities, everyone is encouraged to engage with this initiative. Scars to STARs Day represents a crucial moment of global solidarity, reminding us that support and understanding can lead to transformation for those affected by traumatic experiences. We can all play a part in mitigating the impact of trauma through awareness, advocacy, and action.
