Montefiore Opens New Health Clinic for Bronx Students to Enhance Access to Care
On May 2, 2025, Montefiore Health System celebrated the opening of its 34th school-based health clinic at IS 229 in the Bronx. This milestone, part of the Montefiore School Health Program (MSHP), marks significant progress in providing comprehensive medical, mental, dental, and vision services to students in grades PreK to 8. The clinic at IS 229 will serve approximately 525 students, including those from the neighboring PS 274, allowing access to care without any cost to families.
The new clinic employs a unique nursing-led model that enhances the delivery of healthcare services directly within the school environment. Dr. Rosy Chhabra, Director of the Montefiore School Health Program, highlighted the necessity of school-based health services, especially given that over a quarter of U.S. children experienced chronic absenteeism in the 2022-2023 school year. Such initiatives not only reduce health-related absences but also alleviate parental concerns about accessing healthcare for their children during work hours.
Recent data shows that MSHP has achieved a 40% reduction in the number of students leaving school due to illness. The clinic's offerings include routine immunizations, physicals, and management of chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes. Mental health services are equally prioritized, ensuring that the emotional well-being of students is safeguarded.
Congressman Adriano Espaillat, who was present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, remarked on the significant benefits the clinic will bring to students and their families. He stated that this center will provide essential services and support, contributing to a brighter future for many young learners in the region.
For over four decades, Montefiore has been at the forefront of integrating healthcare services within school systems. The efforts reflect a commitment to addressing the multifaceted health needs of children by considering physical, social, emotional, and environmental factors that contribute to their overall well-being. According to Dr. Chhabra, with the establishment of the new clinic, Montefiore's initiative now reaches more than 40,000 students across the Bronx, impacting approximately one in four local students.
Montefiore Health System is recognized as one of New York's premier academic health systems, serving nearly three million residents throughout the Bronx, Westchester, and the Hudson Valley. It offers a wide array of healthcare services through ten hospitals and over 200 outpatient care sites, underscoring its dedication to high-quality and accessible healthcare for the community. Through collaborations with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore continuously integrates advanced research into their healthcare practices, which leads to better patient outcomes. The institution remains a beacon of hope and health in the Bronx, building a foundation for future generations to thrive.
