Crowley Expands Its Fleet with the Launch of the LNG-Powered Tiscapa in Central America and the Caribbean

Crowley Expands to Meet Growing Cargo Demands

Crowley Maritime Corporation is making a significant leap forward in its shipping capabilities with the introduction of its latest LNG-powered containership, the Tiscapa. This new addition to Crowley's fleet commenced its inaugural service recently, aimed specifically at enhancing cargo transport throughout the Caribbean and Central American regions.

Equipped with a capacity of 1,400 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), including 300 refrigerated units, the Tiscapa represents a major upgrade in Crowley’s logistical operations. Designed to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG), this vessel not only offers increased speed and capacity but also plays a crucial role in reducing emissions in marine transport. Andrew Davis, the Vice President of Operations for Crowley Logistics, highlighted the importance of Tiscapa in enabling faster and more reliable service for transporting essential goods across the U.S. and Caribbean Basin.

The Tiscapa set sail from the Port of Jacksonville, Florida, marking the beginning of its commercial voyage that will connect the U.S. directly with the Dominican Republic and further into Central America. The ship will facilitate trade by delivering various critical commodities such as medical devices, food products, and household goods efficiently. This enhancement in service follows the successful launch of sister ships, Quetzal and Copán, which are also part of the Avance Class. These vessels are strategically designed to service key markets in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, promoting trade within these growing economies.

The unique name, Tiscapa, draws inspiration from a lagoon in Nicaragua’s capital, Managua, reflecting Crowley’s commitment to the cultural heritage of the region where it has operated shipping and logistics services for over sixty years. The Tiscapa lagoon, known for its volcanic origins and historical significance, symbolizes the rich cultural backdrop against which Crowley serves its customers.

The company prides itself on its ability to innovate within the shipping industry. With the addition of Tiscapa, Crowley continues to uphold its dedication towards sustainability through the use of LNG fuel, which is expected to significantly lower environmental impact compared to traditional marine fuels. This aligns with growing global movements towards embracing cleaner energy sources in maritime operations.

Looking ahead, Crowley anticipates completing its Avance Class series with the introduction of Torogoz, the fourth ship in this innovative fleet. Set to launch in August, Torogoz is named after the national bird of El Salvador, further emphasizing Crowley's connection to the region’s culture and natural heritage. Each vessel in the Avance Class reflects a thoughtful approach to maritime logistics, catering to the evolving needs of cargo transport in an increasingly interconnected world.

As Tiscapa embarks on its journey, it embodies the promise of improved logistics and deeper connections between supply chains spanning the United States and Central America. With this ship, Crowley not only expands its maritime capabilities but also reinforces its commitment to providing environmentally friendly shipping solutions that support regional economies.

In an era where efficiency and sustainability in shipping are more crucial than ever, the launch of Tiscapa is set to redefine standards in maritime logistics, paving the way for a more sustainable future in cargo transport.
