NSU Receives a $6 Million Boost for Veterans Care
Nova Southeastern University (NSU), located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has secured a substantial
$6 million in funding from the state to enhance its
Veterans Care Program. This initiative, aimed at providing crucial healthcare services to veterans and their families, underscores the commitment to supporting those who have served the nation. The appropriation, presented by Florida State Representative
Hillary Cassel, is a significant step towards expanding accessible medical services for veterans across the state.
Meeting Veterans' Needs
Unlike conventional clinics, NSU's Veterans Care Program operates as a
healthcare access initiative, offering a wide variety of services at minimal or no cost to eligible veterans and their immediate family members. Since its launch in
2019, the program has already assisted over
10,000 patients, resulting in nearly
100,000 patient encounters in diverse fields such as dental, vision, hearing, and mental health.
Commitment to Veterans
NSU President and CEO
Dr. Harry K. Moon emphasized the university’s long-standing dedication to serving veterans. “For more than four decades, NSU has been proactive in honoring veterans through initiatives like the Veterans Resource Center and the Yellow Ribbon Program,” he stated. The university not only provides essential healthcare services but also offers tailored academic, financial, health, and career support to veterans and their families. Currently, NSU hosts nearly
1,000 student veterans and has earned the
Silver designee for the Governor's Military and Veteran Friendly Campus designation for the academic year 2024-2025.
Allocation of Funding
From the
$6 million funding,
$5 million is designated specifically for patient care, while the remaining
$1 million will be allocated for capital improvements within NSU's dental facilities. This funding is also aimed at bolstering outreach efforts and clinical operations, ultimately expanding available services for the coming year. Dr. Moon noted, “This investment allows us to build on our existing framework, align our resources more effectively, and ensure veterans and their families receive compassionate, timely care.”
Legislative Support
Representative Cassel expressed pride in facilitating this funding for NSU’s Veterans Care Program, highlighting that it represents a commitment to breaking down barriers to healthcare for veterans and their families. “This appropriation is a testament to honoring service with action and ensuring vital services are available to those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” she emphasized.
Criteria for Eligibility
To access the program, veterans must provide proof of honorable discharge and residency in Florida. Services are offered at various NSU Health locations, including Fort Lauderdale, North Miami Beach, and Clearwater. The program also extends its services to eligible dependents, which includes spouses and children under the age of
18.

The additional funding for the Veterans Care Program at NSU not only emphasizes the importance of healthcare access for veterans but also propels the university's standing as a leader in veteran support services in the state.
