Community College of Denver Joins Unlocking Opportunity Network
In a significant step towards improving educational outcomes and workforce alignment, the Community College of Denver (CCD) has recently been chosen by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program to join the Unlocking Opportunity Network. This program is designed to aid community colleges in reforming their educational offerings to ensure that students earn degrees leading to lucrative job opportunities. Notably, CCD is the sole recipient in Colorado to be included in this initiative, further reinforcing its position as a state leader in facilitating student success.
The Unlocking Opportunity Network is part of a broader initiative that connects 55 community colleges across the nation, all committed to enhancing student outcomes through innovative reforms. CCD will be collaborating with the Aspen Institute and the Community College Research Center to implement evidence-based changes focused on improving accessibility and advising. The objective is to create better alignment between educational programs and the career needs of local industries, thereby addressing both student aspirations and talent shortages in the workforce.
According to Tina Garcia, Vice President of Student Services at CCD, being part of this prestigious network showcases the college's unwavering dedication to student success and effective workforce development. Garcia emphasized, "This initiative ensures that every student has access to valuable programs that can lead to meaningful careers or facilitate seamless transfers to four-year institutions. Our work contributes to strengthening Colorado's communities and overall economy."
Josh Wyner, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, also highlighted the importance of this initiative. He noted that millions of students depend on community colleges to provide cost-effective pathways to high-value credentials. Students expect that their degrees and certificates will translate into good jobs and fulfilling careers, either directly or upon transferring to earn bachelor's degrees. The colleges participating in the Unlocking Opportunity Network are dedicated to working over the next three years to implement necessary reforms to make this expectation a reality for thousands more students.
This comprehensive project is made possible through the support of several key organizations, including Arnold Ventures, Bank of America, ECMC Foundation, and JPMorganChase. The latter's backing is particularly vital for the expansion of the Unlocking Opportunity Network, allowing CCD and its partner institutions to undertake meaningful changes that address both local and national workforce needs.
The Community College of Denver, a fully accredited institution, is noted for its commitment to graduating students with lower debt levels and maintaining guaranteed transfer agreements with all Colorado state colleges and universities. Furthermore, CCD is recognized for its innovative certificate and degree programs, both on-campus and online. The college also offers a unique no-tuition high school diploma program aimed at helping students embark on their educational journeys.
