Clean Power Alliance Launches Innovative Daytime Electricity Pilot Program for Households

The Clean Power Alliance (CPA) has officially kicked off an innovative pilot program designed to incentivize Southern California households to shift their electricity usage to daytime hours. This initiative, known as the Time-Of-Use-SMART Pilot (TOU-SMART), aims to engage over 4,000 participating homes by providing them with a $0 generation rate for electricity consumed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. This program not only seeks to enhance the adoption of solar energy but also stands to significantly reduce household electricity bills over the next two years.

The motivation behind the TOU-SMART pilot is driven by the need to maximize the utilization of abundant solar energy produced during the daytime. By encouraging residents to adjust their electricity consumption patterns, CPA hopes to lessen demand during peak hours—between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.—when electricity generation is costlier. As a result, participating households will have the potential to save hundreds of dollars annually by relocating some of their energy use activities into the daytime hours. For example, homeowners can benefit by charging electric vehicles, running appliances, or maintaining pool pumps when electricity is economically favorable.

In an exciting twist, CPA is also ensuring that participants are protected from any financial disadvantage that may arise from joining the pilot. Should a household find that they pay more with the TOU-SMART rate than under their current TOU-D-PRIME rate, CPA will grant a credit adjustment to make up the difference after every 12-month period. This feature not only strengthens consumer confidence in the pilot but also allows families to disenroll when desired.

CPA's CEO, Ted Bardacke, expressed confidence in the pilot’s impact, stating, “TOU-SMART is about putting an idea into practice and learning from real-world outcomes.
