Celebrating a Milestone: Leica Store and Gallery Boston's 10th Anniversary

This fall, Leica Store and Gallery Boston proudly celebrates its 10th anniversary, marking a decade filled with creativity, collaboration, and community building among photographers and artists. The highlight of this celebration is the special exhibition titled "Community Garden: Celebrating 10 Years of Leica Store and Gallery Boston." This exhibition serves as a tribute to the individuals and partnerships that have significantly shaped the store during its vibrant history.

Founded in September 2016, the Leica Store and Gallery opened its doors with a community gathering and a retrospective exhibit featuring renowned photographer Constantine Manos. Over the years, it has established itself as a hub for photographic art in New England, hosting numerous exhibitions, workshops, artist talks, and community events. The space has not only showcased works from established photographers but has also provided a platform for emerging talents.

The significance of this anniversary is underscored by the gallery's lasting relationships with prominent organizations such as the Photographic Resource Center and the Griffin Museum of Photography. Mike Giannattasio, President of Leica Camera North America, emphasizes that the store has transcended its role as a retail space; it has evolved into a vital gathering place for artists where creative ideas can flourish. In his words, it is the customers and collaborators who have made Leica Boston what it is today.

The Exhibition: Exploring Community and Nature

"Community Garden" reunites 13 photographers who have previously exhibited at the gallery alongside four newcomers from the next generation of artists. Notable returning photographers include names like Mathieu Bitton and Mary Ellen Mark, alongside emerging talents like Mav Fernandez. Their works span diverse styles and themes; from portraiture and landscape to documentary photography, created using both film and digital formats with Leica cameras.

The exhibition features photographs that have been produced from 1961 to 2026, showcasing a unique blend of experiences. Many artworks explore nature's relationship with urban settings, and how these landscapes of varying cultural identities interact with elements of memory and community. As exhibition manager Bell Pitkin states, this event reflects the ongoing connections among photography, place, and community, encouraging meaningful conversations among attendees.

The gallery will continue to operate Monday to Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday from 12 PM to 5 PM, at its location on Arlington Street in Boston.
