Soterion's SAP License Manager Achieves Milestone with 100 FUE Assessments Amid Licensing Challenges

Soterion's SAP License Manager Reaches 100 FUE Assessments

In an impressive achievement, Soterion announced that its SAP License Manager has successfully completed its 100th Full User Equivalent (FUE) licensing assessment, just one year following the module's launch. This milestone underscores the increasing demand for specialized licensing expertise as companies transition from SAP ECC to SAP Cloud ERP Private.

The demand for Soterion's solution is driven by a significant shift in how SAP measures user licenses. Under the new STAR framework used by SAP Cloud ERP Private, FUE consumption is determined by the SAP permissions assigned to users, regardless of whether these permissions are actively utilized. As many legacy SAP role designs were not created with FUE optimization in mind, numerous businesses find themselves consuming far more FUEs than their actual user activities warrant.

Given that user licenses typically account for 30 to 60 percent of a company's total SAP software investments, an inflated initial value or uncontrolled role changes can lead to unnecessary subscription costs and potential repayment risks in the future.

The Soterion SAP License Manager evaluates the actual usage of SAP permissions instead of solely relying on the assigned access rights. This solution provides organizations with three crucial metrics: the FUE consumption based on their current role design, potential reductions achievable through role optimization, and the best-case scenario FUE needs based on real user interactions with SAP.

In its initial assessments, Soterion found that outdated SAP role designs generally overestimated companies' FUE needs by around four times. By bringing transparency to the actual use of SAP permissions, Soterion aids companies in accurately determining their FUE requirements before entering into commercial negotiations with SAP.

For those firms already utilizing SAP Cloud ERP Private, the solution enables targeted FUE optimization programs, aligning FUE usage with their contracted permissions while providing ongoing transparency for proactive license consumption management throughout the subscription period.

Dudley Cartwright, CEO and co-founder of Soterion, commented, “The STAR licensing model from SAP is actually very fair; I would even argue it's relatively generous. However, the challenge lies in the fact that most companies either lack the time or the tools necessary to redesign their SAP roles for FUE optimization. As a result, many are consuming more FUEs than necessary. Our role is to provide companies with the transparency they need to reduce unnecessary consumption and align with their contractual permissions for sustainable FUE governance.”

Cartwright also highlighted, “Designing SAP roles is no longer just about security; it has become a financial control instrument. Any changes to roles can potentially influence both access risks and the costs of software licenses.”

The completion of 100 assessments in just the first year illustrates the significant challenges that companies face. As they work towards deadlines for the end of support for SAP ECC and migrate to SAP Cloud ERP Private, many are realizing that effective FUE management is critical to a successful migration strategy.

Soterion offers a free SAP FUE assessment to help companies understand their current FUE consumption, identify optimization opportunities, and establish an informed baseline before negotiating or managing SAP Cloud-ERP-Private subscriptions.
