Reviving the Onagawa Minato Festival: A Drone Show Extravaganza
On July 26, 2026, a spectacular drone show will take place as part of the 59th Onagawa Minato Festival in Onagawa, Miyagi Prefecture, organized by Redcliff, Inc. This year's event holds special significance as it commemorates the 100th anniversary of the town's establishment. The festivities will include a unique two-part drone performance that aims to rekindle the joyful memories associated with the pre-2011 earthquake floating fireworks known as the "Niagara."
The drone show, designed under the concept of Onagawa’s slogan, "A town where the world’s best new beginnings are born. START! ONAGAWA," will convey the town's resilience and hope while celebrating its journey into the next century.
A Journey Through Time in Two Parts
Part 1: A Tribute to Nature and Resilience
In the first part of the show, a stunning display featuring 500 drones will highlight the rich natural beauty of Onagawa as well as beloved local motifs representing its historical significance. This segment aims to illustrate the town's recovery from the devastating effects of the 2011 earthquake, showcasing its strength and spirit while taking a step towards a promising future.
Part 2: The Return of the Iconic "Niagara"
The second part is particularly special, featuring a reenactment of the beloved "Niagara" floating fireworks, which were once the grand finale of the Onagawa Minato Festival. This segment incorporates 200 drones and serves as a tribute to the cultural heritage that many residents cherish deeply. Having long been absent from the festival scene, the revival of this segment through modern drone technology not only evokes nostalgia but also presents an innovative spectacle for a new generation.
Voices from the Community
Tetsuya Isobe, a representative from the Onagawa Minato Festival Support Association, expressed excitement about this year’s festival, stating, "The 59th Onagawa Minato Festival, occurring in this milestone year, has been a cherished event for many summers in Onagawa. Despite interruptions caused by the earthquake and the COVID-19 pandemic, we revived this festival in 2022, thanks to overwhelming support from the community. We are thrilled to bring back 'Niagara' through a drone show, reinventing a beloved sight for everyone to enjoy."
Toshiki Goto, manager of the Redcliff production team, shared, "In crafting this drone show, we aimed to deliver a performance that honors the town's 100th anniversary while embracing the local landscapes and festival history. The 'Niagara' symbolized the end of the festival for many, and we hope to evoke fond memories for longtime residents while showcasing Onagawa's unique charm to first-time visitors. Our aim is for this show to reflect Onagawa's rich history while stepping confidently into its next century."
